I used to be a complete judgemental ass towards @Eccentric about his drug use and look down on those who drank to excess as nothing but winos until I got into the Navy and had the worst work environment is ever had to that point. I had a clean black out once of a few hours and that was more than enough to shut me up forever about how chicks who black out at frat parties have it coming

This Peterson thing reminds me of a guy I met on Tumblr who bragged about flaming someone into an anxiety attack over alledged whitewashing of a character (it wasnt), then when someone came along who accidentally misgendered them and didn't correct it immediately because they were too busy telling them off for being a gaslighting piece of shit, they latched on and had the audacity to say they were triggered into suicidal thoughts. everyone deserves to be called by their gender, yes. But in that moment one of those things was definitely worse.

And this Peterson guy apparent has made an entire lifestyle preaching something that he couldn't apply to his own life, and all while being ugly towards others about that and 100 other things.

Look, I don't follow Peterson. I haven't watched the Joe Rogan podcast with him on. I just simply don't care. I'll say this. This is the reason I stopped giving a shit about transgender stuff like bathrooms. Not saying I don't give a shit about transgender rights, I'm saying I'm not going to play into right wing talking points about it. I understand the feeling of being an outsider or feeling like nobody gives a shit about me or whatever. Like all of us, we all have our own shit to deal with. Life is hard. Yes, I've been a judgemental and yes I still am at some times, but I'm not a complete heartless asshole. Unfortunately people turn to drugs, myself included, to deal with that shit. Peterson may be a piece of shit, but it takes a lot of heart ache to do so and unless you're literally Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, Castro or someone like that, I'm sorry, I can't wish that on anyone. I just can't. I hope he gets well. So yeah I'm no liberal hippie, but, you know, shit happens and people are born how they're born, they can't help it. So I sympathize. I could say more, but I'll leave it there.

I have mixed feelings about Peterson in that I despise his politics but acknowledge that he does come from an empirical background. It isn't about the facts, it's his interpretations and value judgements I take issue with. He stands as an example of how value free data and theories can effectively support any position given the predisposition to cast them in a given (quite unpleasant) light. It's much the way Thatcher took the fundamentals of natural selection and coined "survival of the fittest" as an economic model for the right.

However, like @Federal Farmer I've had my own substance issues and wouldn't wish that on anyone, nor would I take any schadenfreude type pleasure in seeing someone get their comeuppance, so to speak. I wish the best for both him and his wife and hope that maybe this has the silver lining of giving him some slightly greater empathy in the future.

I don't think the judgement involved is about being addicted. The judgment seems to be about being a sanctimonious asshole and it is just ironic that he happened to be sanctimonious about being a drug addict in the past. I can sort of agree with that. If this guy was an unforgiving asshole to drug addicts before and made light of their struggles only to succumb to it himself then he can suck a bag of dicks. There are plenty of more decent people to help out with addiction and perhaps some time in the gutter will help him sort out his bullshit and remind him he is human like the people he shit on before.

That sort of idea is quite incorrect. The idea that drugs are a crutch people use is a bad attempt to attain superiority over people who use or get addicted to drugs. You are correct it is a clear misunderstanding of addiction, but in his defense perhaps he has not known addiction to really have a proper idea of it. If you have not been there or have only seen it presented on the media or not in an intimate relationship you don't really have the experience to make a proper claim about judgement.

However, being that this person seems to have judged others without understanding I am still a bit fine with kicking him as long as one recognizes the similarities they have with him.

I can go along with that up to the end. I admit to taking some pleasure in the unfortunate events that hit an ignorant ass. I am a bit of a proponent of the idea stupidity should be painful. That is mostly because when I do something stupid and it hurts I tend to try to think before doing things in the future. Of course, stupidity is relative to perspective also. So things a right wing idiot may think I do are stupid may not actually be stupid and therefor should not be painful.

Now Peterson is trying to make his own social media platform that bans emojis and memes.
