According to Tererun and Garamet and a few others on WF, nearly 100 percent of the time. Never mind a lot of people actually have weapons training and never fire unless they can properly ID their target and ensure there's nothing behind it to accidentally hit. True I suck with a pistol, the only gun I have immediate access to. But with that in mind I really take where those bullets can go very seriously! Our cops here in Augusta are pretty good shots. Since I've been living here there hasn't been a legitimately "bad shoot." Of course any shoot brings out a whole neighborhood of "he was an angel! He wouldn't hurt a fly!" until the facts are laid out & then they shut up pretty fast.

You know what I did for a living - not many people come into the army with combat experience. You have to trust them sometime, right? What choice did I have? Everyone has to start somewhere, so we have thousands of kids carrying/using weapons in a combat zone. And nothing against paintball, but combat in general is a few levels above paintball in danger and importance and personal weapon responsibility.
It's "you can put an eye out" versus "you can take a head off." And don't get me started on the .50 cal which is just a ton of fun to deal with.

Not everyone has gone through boot camp. You see, you have had experience with people after boot camp or during the process. I have experience with your weekend warrior. The weekend warrior has no boot camp. The weekend warrior has no training. The weekend warrior is what I am talking about. Of course trained people are better at handling weapons. That may be the difference between you and me. you see everyone as a recruit and I see everyone as a customer. There is a huge difference, and given the percentage of the population that has served in the armed forces I have a better statistical grasp on the common person. Also, this is why I know that even though the basic military grunt may not seem like much in relation to more experienced and better trained military, they are still worth a whole lot more than a civilian with no training or civilian movie training.

You just named three reasons to distinguish potential gun owners from each other. Not the best basis on which to argue for a universal right. Of course, you've often said that you support sensible checks on people, rather than guns, when the former want access to the latter. I'm really just surprised how often you seem to be taking the opposite side of that argument, such as now.

Your message sounds convoluted. I don't know what you mean to be honest. BTW yes I suck with a pistol, and have no problem with a rifle, but then again I haven't had much pistol practice.

Clearly, option 2. I would rather try to defend my life and, if I must be killed, I'd rather it be that I go down shooting it out with someone than waiting to be executed.

Here's my hypothetical:

You're trapped in a movie theater when a deranged gunman starts shooting up the place.

You have little hope of escape, but you do have a magic button you can press which will transport an adult American drawn entirely at random and armed with a handgun into the chair next to you in order to be your defender. Do you press the button or not?

I do not press the button. Chances are it's somebody ill equipped to handle the situation and his firing draws attention in my direction. Chances are, he also kills some innocents.

I was going to post, odds are you'd get a crazy or oldfella and end up getting shot by the guy you zapped in next to you. I'll take my chances staying low and making for the exits (option 3). Actually in my world this hardly ever happens. I don't plan for tornadoes either (I think their probability are much higher but I could be wrong).

In my defense the pistol I was shooting has a heavy trigger pull. I can actually shoot a revolver (with a smooth light trigger pull) much more accurately. So I were beamed down with a revolver I would attempt to kill the shooter while you crawl away. I'll even get some distance from you first so if I draw fire no shots will head your way. Everyone has their role in life, their comfort zone. Running away or hiding just freaks me out - I'd have to use cover/concealment as tactically as possible and try to get closer and then engage when the opportunity opens up. Take the fight to the bad guy! Fight your fight, not his.

I disagree about running away. Something about living to fight another day (when it makes sense).

Only if the retreat is temporary as part of your overall strategy. But if you're running away in fear and panic (versus in control) and leave others holding the bag - you suck.
