You know the Shire and many other locations in the books were BASED on the lands Tolkien grew up in, yes?
What's a Tolking? But seriously, if that's why they're making the move, great. But I've also been reading for a year about it being the most expensive series ever made, and they made the conscious decision to film the first season in New Zealand, so I suspect their motivation is less than pure.
They’re probably spending a lot on CGI and hopefully @matthunter is correct and the want to film in locations where Tolkein grew up.
So, I'm the only one who read the article? AFAIK, the biggest Amazon series being shot in the UK is Good Omens.
Still feels like a fancy way to saying they're cheaping out. I bet NZ labour laws let the actors have proper piss breaks too.
My understanding is that pre-Brexit, the UK had fairly stringent labor laws when it came to shooting a series/movie due to being in the EU. Post-Brexit, it seems as if there's some question if they'll continue to follow those same laws.
Ridley Scott supposedly hates shooting in the UK because they have to stop every day at certain times so the crew can have tea.
I've read The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion at least several times each. I spent part of my college days sitting in the university library, skimming through those huge volumes that Christopher Tolkien (RIP) put together to reconstruct his father's development of LotR. I've read Lost Tales and a few other of those books. I sat through Peter Jackson's trilogies. I even have a few fond memories of the Bakshi cartoons. I was very interested when I thought Amazon was going to do a LotR miniseries, where the books wouldn't have to be compressed into three movies that had to appeal to a broad audience. I would have been down for a partial or complete Silmarillion where I could just skip Turin Turambar's episodes because . But Numenor is the only thing listed in the quote that interests me now, because Tolkien gave enough detail there for a well-intentioned production to build upon without the result being more Hollywood than Tolkien. And yes, Sauron had a lot of charisma and he used it effectively before the . . . incident.

Is this supposed to be when the elves were still in Valinor? And Galadriel's armor is a little too monochromatic for my taste.
I think so, since it's set in the Second Age, Numenor, etc. The Rounding of the World and the sinking of Numenor happen towards the end of the Second Age.
The Noldor were gone from Valinor before the ring-making happened. The Vanyar were still there though. I can get behind Elrond, though he looks like he's waiting for Julian to get off shift so they can play darts. I don't see Galadriel in the actress. But you never know until you see them in action.
