Right, because the phrase originated with me. Before I walked the Earth, no one had ever suggested to another that they take their own life. Thank you for noticing, and giving credit where credit is due.

Pretty sure it's a Faceman classic, but Flashy delighted in its use too.
They had joint custody for awhile.
Hence its appropriateness in my post.

Well it's a lot older than that. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say I'm pretty sure its first usage probably predates Socrates snuffing it.

That's all very informative, and I assume "KRAD" ( ) is also well aware of it, being a 20-year veteran of the industry. So you'd think that after 20 years of publishing, he'd have gotten things worked out to the point where there wouldn't be extended periods of time without money coming in, that he'd have a steady stream of projects in the pipeline to guard against going six months without an income. Because, as a 20-year veteran, he knows all about the inconsistent nature of freelance work, right Garamet? Or is he just incompetent in terms of managing his finances? You'd think that, knowing all about the unpredictable nature of freelance work, he'd have a savings account for these down times, right?

You see, you silly cunt, the question isn't whether *I* understand anything about freelance work and the publishing industry, it's whether, after 20 years, *DeCandido* understands anything about it.

Yes yes, you and your "midlist" brethren are victims of an unfair and inequitable system. Let's all feel sorry for poor, poor Garamet, a sheep amongst wolves.

Nobody ever said every writer is Stephen King. You need to put more effort into your strawmen. But I take note of your intense jealousy towards any writer who has achieved more success than yourself. I suppose if you write a string of novels that have strains of genius running through them that become cultural touchstones, you may be "Stephen King" yourself one day.

Yes, but they're not all on GoFundMe panhandling for rent money.

Why is it you presume to be on a first name / nickname basis with other writers?

And my point, which predictably sailed over your head, was that obviously he wasn't making enough money doing this, or selling his autograph, to pay the rent.

If hubby's career was that unstable, then wifey should have been out working all along.

Does Garamet really think the rest of us don't understand the concept of rent? Diacanu the notable exception, of course....

Nobody questioned whether he was being accurate in listing his previous clients. Again, the point was that despite this array of impressive experience and clientele, he's now panhandling for cash.

Hmmmm.......well, whatever work I've been paid for in my life, it's been my work. I've never been paid for work that I fucked up and someone else had to come in and clean up my mess. So you can be assured, if you're eating deep fried cheese sticks, I'm the one who lowered the wire basket into the grease. :)

Translation: your editors know it sucks and aren't willing to take a chance on it. If they were, you wouldn't be forced to offer it for free to drum up interest. Out of curiosity, did you offer to let DeCandido edit it, so you could give him some paying work?

And if you were concerned about preserving anything positive of your professional reputation, I wouldn't thank me for bring attention to that literary abortion.

What does this have to do with DeCandido?

Regardless, you're not just offering a sneak peek at the first chapter, you've put the whole book out there. That's an act of desperation.

We've covered this before. You need the attention, if nobody was "stalking" you, that would mean you weren't important anymore.

One of the things that's always fascinated me about Garamet is her need for self-mythologization.

She's not just a "midlist" writer who's been lucky enough to publish a few books. No, she's a practitioner of an arcane and mysterious sorcery called "publishing" that we mere mortals simply can't comprehend. :dayton:

So she proceeds to melodramatically explain the most basic & mundane concepts, acting like she's Merlin revealing the secrets of The Dragon to Morgana.

I suppose her life is so unfulfilling she needs this extra dimension of imaginary significance to make everything seem worthwhile. It's fascinating. Her contempt for own life is palpable, her contempt for her fan base is well documented. Despite this, she clings to the identity of the "midlist" writer because it allows her to indulge her victim fantasy. Yes, victimhood is an integral part of her psychological makeup. In her telling, poor Garamet was victimized by multiple evil, malevolent people who all conspired against her in the Probe debacle. More generally, she's victimized by an inequitable publishing world apparatus that takes advantage of "midlist" writers who lack negotiating leverage. And because of this supposed inequity, Garamet feverishly defends a 20-year veteran of the publishing industry who has had his work marketed across multiple platforms, yet has somehow mismanaged his financial affairs to the point where he has to panhandle for rent money.

For those of you who looked at the above Flashlight post and concluded TLDR, good choice. I made the mistake of reading it, so I can offer this service. The whole thing boils down to this:

Flashlight has finally admitted his actual profession. He's a fry cook, and a damn good one.

I thought in another thread, that Garamet said that after you had five reasonably successful books published you could then pretty much live on the proceeds from them.

I don't remember for sure but I thought KRAD had more than five books published.

Yes, she did say that. Not that she'll admit it now, as it contradicts her current....arguments? Exactly what is she arguing here?

You know what DeCandido could have offered that would have really made donating to him worthwhile? If you donated $500, he would offer to read your manuscript and constructively critique it, give you pointers, talk to you about how you could improve it to make it marketable. As a published author who has a wealth of editing experience, that would have definitely been worth the money, IMHO. Harry Knowles of AICN offered something similar during his infamous Kickstarter campaign - send me your screenplay and I'll critique it.

Instead he offers to give you access to a lame PDF.

I'm genuinely surprised Garamet has chosen to hitch her wagon to this horse.

I wouldn't have said that, because there are too many variables. What kind of books, in what genre? Standalones or part of a series? What advance amounts, delivered on what schedule? What royalty percentage? Foreign rights? Reprints? Tie-ins to other media (that's where the big bucks are)? And after those five novels, then what? Like the movie industry, the book business is all about "What have you done for me lately?"

ETA: Flashy will now link to where he thinks I said that. :waiting:

Yeah, no, I don't think so. It doesn't actually work as a metaphor. He used it to illustrate that he's a hard worker. Why pick a job he doesn't do? That would pretty much counter the entire point.

Metaphor. It's a response to garamet's Deep Fryer Degreaser jab immediately before.

    Moron.

The point being made is that, whatever I do for a living (and I derive no small amount of pleasure from you fools not knowing exactly what that entails), the work I'm paid for is my own, not somebody else's work that gets passed off as mine.

But, you already knew all that. You're still burdened with the delusion that just because you intentionally misstate and/or misrepresent what someone else says, you're making an intelligent argument. Capt. PsyOps been instructing you in his ways?

According to my research Keith DeCandidio has written no less than FIFTEEN Star Trek novels alone. And that represents only about one quarter of his entire officially published output.

Again, how does someone that successful end up hard for cash?

If you read the original article, you'd see that it wasn't a matter of lack of cash, but of cash flow. He had several deals in the pipeline and the people responsible for countersigning the contracts and cutting the checks were dragging their asses. This is surprisingly common. Q.v. what I said about the class action suit against Pocket in Post #34.

It's not the same as getting a paycheck every week.

FryBoy™ is actually right about this writer. Just about all crowd funding campaigns are a con, this is no different. But it has the added spectacle of somebody who should have his own resources convincing people of his need.

    Broken clock and all that.

I wonder how long Dul is going to flog the "FryBoy" thing? He obviously thinks it's terribly clever. :dayton:
