Yep. They were afraid then, as they are now, that people of color would gain representation in the government, and start treating them like they did the slaves. That is why we still see this fight today. White America is fucking terrified people of color will finally get proper representation, will gain power, and will do to them what they've done to countless others via their ruthless actions at the behest of their vision of Manifest Destiny.

I was thinking more along the lines of them not wanting the rich Virginia landowners running Congress. I doubt blacks gaining power was on anyone's radar, at least not until the slave revolt on Haiti in 1804. That did a lot to end the practice around the world.

The 3/5th thing wasn't about the black slaves at all. It was about keeping the white southern state voters and from having a disproportional amount of power. Anna said exactly as much.

I don't know why you would post a screenshot, rather than just linking or copy/pasting the article (other than your brain leaking out of your ear). But the diversity visa program has been around for over two decades and was the brainchild of Democrats and Republicans alike. And it was signed into law by a Republican president. The program itself is not inherently a bad thing; it has in fact been somewhat of a success because it encourages individuals from countries that have a lower net migration rate to the U.S. to come in (i.e. the bigger immigrant countries such as China and Mexico are excluded from this lottery).

Maybe try researching the program before regurgitating Breitbart talking points.

Maybe it's time to change this program. Merit based should be the way to go instead of just letting in people for good feelings.

Why? Merit-based is the relatively newer criteria. For the majority of our history, we let pretty much everyone in unless they were criminals. We seem to have turned out OK.
