http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/disney-closes-lucasarts/ Sucks. I was hoping for an updated version of X-Wing/TIE Fighter...
My first upgrade was me doubling my RAM and putting in a 256 color graphics card in my LCII so I could run Fate of Atlantis. I still run through it every couple of years. I reference El Pollo Diablo a couple times a month. Dark Forces and TIE Fighter were some of my favorite FPS and flight sim games. I played the fuck out of almost everything they did. The end of an era.
Mixed feelings. Although, because it was a "small" in house organisation I always felt that Lucasarts had that extra attention to details, someof their best titles, like Knights of the Old Republic, were ultimately framed out to third parties (such as Bioware). I'm not sure it'll have a huge impact on the quality of the titles. After all, for all the good efforts from Lucasarts there have also been some real stinkers.
Don't worry -- Guybrush Threepwood lives on as the Lanun civ Hero in the Civilzation IV Fall From Heaven 2 mod. And he sings. While kicking ass Orc, Elf and Demon ass.
I don't understand the Disney hate... This is something that makes sound business sense for development of the franchise.
Wow!! I was really looking forward to Star Wars 1313, but Bear is right. There has to be at least a dozen developer studios and publishers that would actually pay Disney for a liscense to make a Star Wars game. It makes no sense for them to pay the expense of an internal development studio.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/30/disney-acquistion-will-not-affect-star-wars-1313 That dates October 2012. Hey, maybe this means the rights to all the classic point and click games will be more readily available for Tim Schafer/Double Fine to do a remake, providing Broken Age is a hit.
One of my father's friends had the unshakable conspiracy theory that Disney makes pornos through a dummy company, and a very well covered paper trail. If true, we've all probably seen something from them that we really dug.
While it's sad to see LucasArts go, it's not the end of the world for Star Wars games. They better make a Star Wars Battlefront 3!!
Oh good, the worst video game company in the world. As long as they release Star Wars: Battlefront 3 I'll be happy.
EA is not the worst video game company in the world. With the Mass Effect franchise and the first DeadSpace, there's a strong argument that EA is demonstrably the makers of the BEST video games this generation. I think it's incredibly stupid of the gaming community to have voted EA the worst company in the world 2 years in a row over the Mass Effect ending. Seriously? With Bank of America, Enron etc... companies that are responsible for putting people out of their homes and worldwide economic collapse, a video game publisher is the most evil because they want to offer microtransactions in full retail games? I know this is a result of the poll being taken online and a lot of gamers just happen to be online when the poll was taken, but a little perspective is needed here. With that said, they have driven the NFL Madden franchise into the ground, IMHO and I have no doubt that this is due to the exclusivity clause they have with the NFL. I'm glad to see that they are at least allowing 3 different studios to develop Star Wars properties, but we'll see how this works out. BioWare and Visceral are very good developers and DICE is nothing to sneeze at. They do great work too. I'm just used to them developing military shooters. It'll be interesting to see what they do with a narrative focused action genre that Star Wars needs to be. Something else to be considered. EA has turned it's back on the WiiU. They have no plans to bring anything they publish to the platform at the moment. I wonder if this Star Wars deal will change that at all?
EA isn't close to worst company in the world, and not even worst video game company IMO. Activision takes that one. Maybe this time EA won't make an MMO with the license. That seemed like a terrible idea. You'd think people would learn by now.
Yeah I couldn't give two shits about the Mass Effect ending. It has more to do questionable decisions about DRM and their nonstop franchises.
The first year it was Mass Effect as far as I could tell. Year 2, it was micro transactions and I don't think Sim City was out when the vote took place, but it's possible.
Well, EA's Origin service is a giant piece of shit compared with Steam. And, as Chad has pointed out, their DRM has been awful. None of this probably matters to AlphaMan because he plays video games on consoles, which are clearly designed for young children and retards. Everyone knows that serious gamers use PCs.
Well, many percieve that to be the accomplishment of specific studios, and view EA as a corporate master to those studios that does more harm than good. Whether that perception is correct is difficult to judge from the outside, but it seems plausible to me. However, ME3's ending isn't evil, and EA is clearly nowhere near the worst company there is, although I could be convinced it's the worst in this business.
