I refuse to watch that trailer. The last trailer was so filled with awesomeness that I do not want to see any new scenes and be spoiled. This movie looks like it's going to fucking rock, and I want to savor every single frame of it's beauty.

This is looking seriously good. When I heard they were remaking Superman I was a bit "meh" about it but I'm getting a bit excited about this now.

    Soundtrack is up on YouTube.

Some decent stuff there so far, but nothing approaching Williams' brilliance.

The Williams score is so iconic, it's probably wise that they went another direction with it. If they tried to come up with another triumphal march kinda thing, it almost certainly would've come up short.

That said, I like what Hans Zimmer has done with the score: the main theme has a soaring, epic feel. If not exactly hummable, I think it will at least be effective at supporting what's on the screen.

Yeah, nothing is going to beat John Williams' theme.

Smart move on the producers to go a different direction. I like it.

I think you're going to be disappointed. One thing they want to do is completely renew the franchise. I don't think there will be much to remind us of the Donner films.

Interestingly enough, though, the screenplay does seem to have a few easter eggs. For instance, I notice that Clark Kent's boyhood antagonist--I believe the kid shown threatening to punch him in the trailer--is Whitney Fordham, a character that exists only in the TV show Smallville.

And I wouldn't be surprised if someone mentions Ben Hubbard, neighbor to the Kents mentioned in several films, Smallville, and the comics, but never seen. (He was a character in Superman Returns--dating Ma Kent!--but his role was entirely cut out. You can only see a bit of him when Ma Kent is at the hospital in the end.)

I'm looking forward to this. Superman Returns had some okay moments, but wasn't a huge fan.

This looks much more interesting. And apparently Man Of Steel 2 has already been green lighted, with Justice League to follow...

    Re: "Man Of Steel", trailer

Early reviews are decidedly mixed.

    FoxNews pans it.

    Chicago Tribune qualified like.

    Rex Reed savagely negative.

Entertainment Weekly gives it a C.

    Village Voice qualified positive.

    New York Post positive review.

    Variety pans it.

Aint It Cool's Mr. Beaks gives it a very positive review.

Aint It Cool's Nordling gives it a very positive review.

Rotten Tomatoes shows it declining as more reviews come in, currently down to 65% fresh (down from 69% this morning!).

Rex Reed's was the most negative review, but he lost all credibility with me when he wrote:

I have to say that I actually rate Burton's Batman over Nolan's. I'm a bit tired of the butt kissing that goes on over the Nolan trilogy. Quite simply I don't think it's as good as they say. They are good films, don't get me wrong, but Bale is nonetheless a shit actor, the scores are forgettable and Ledger's Joker isn't the Joker to me, he's just a man who licks his lips a lot.

I've listened to the score for Man of Steel and it simply doesn't have a patch on John Williams. Similarly, I can't help but look at the designs for Krypton and Zod and just think it looks a bit generic like so many other tentpole movies these days.

That said, and this is the deal breaker for me, I do get the Superman feeling from Henry Cavill. I will always be primarily a Reeve disciple, but I'm feeling Superman more when I see clips of Cavill than I did Brandon Routh (who basically got shafted). The rest are really ancillary. For move the movie lives or dies on it's capture of Superman, much as I felt that JJ Trek had to try to grasp Roddenberry values (which it failed to do). Suffice it to say I am still very much excited to see Man of Steel because I think that for whatever shortcomings it has over the Donnerverse, they nonetheless have a good feel for the character - and I'm thinking I willlike the take on Superman way better than Nolan's Batman.

Someone figured out that you could have a shitty movie, but if you made reference to Rex Reed in the film (such as having one character named "Rex" and another named "Reed"), Reed would give you a great review. (Notice the videotapes in the Tower Records sequence of Amazon Women on the Moon, you'll see Reed's name on the tape titles.) I've never given Reed any credence after learning that.

Dunno. I was wild about the Burton movies when they were new, but they haven't aged well and, though they were supposed to be a darker, more serious take on Batman, in a lot of ways they're as campy as the old TV show.
Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. The Nolan films raised the bar on the superhero genre and injected a dose of realism into them. No comic book film could actually happen, of course, but I believe that if they could, the Nolan films are what they'd be like.
I have to hear/see the finished product to have a real opinion. No, I haven't heard anything that makes me forget John Williams' iconic theme, but anyone who does a decent job replacing it deserves respect.
Definitely liking what I see so far.
Routh did a very respectable job in Superman Returns (which, for all its weaknesses, I liked quite a lot) and I was kinda hoping he'd get another shot.
Eh, the really significant things about Roddenberry's vision--an optimistic human future, tolerance and friendship among different cultures, the importance of holding to a moral code--survive in JJTrek.
I'm still pumped to see it; already have my ticket for Thursday night.

I never saw the Burton Batman movies in the theaters (due to work schedules), when the first one came out on video, a buddy insisted I come over to watch it immediately. I'll never forget him popping in the tape, seeing Michael Keaton in his Batman costume, flapping his arms on a rooftop, hissing, and saying, "You know, this looked pretty good on the big screen, but on TV it looks pretty gay." I think that aptly sums up most of Burton's output.

I haven't seen "Batman Returns" in a long time. And I haven't watched "Batman" in long enough that I can probably no longer recite it line for line, but it does very very well at bringing Batman to the big screen.

I remember one contemporary review for it called it "operatic." In other words it is highly stylized with an appropriately gothic feel. No one is going to think "you know, that could happen" any more than they are going to think the stuff in the comic books could actually happen. But it has brooding operatic music, moody lighting, Nicholson hamming it up, great art direction, and lots of memorable lines/moments.

"Where does he get those wonderful toys?!" Followed immediately by the "Get in the car." "Which one?" reveal of the Batmobile that, watching it at 12am on June 23, 1989, had pretty much everyone in the theater standing up applauding.

Yup. The early days of advance screenings. Drove up to the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth to stand in line in my black oilskin duster and Graffiti Batman t-shirt along with hundreds of other comic book nerds. (OK. Maybe I didn't wear the duster, I forget.)

The Age of Innocence. The Before Time. A world many of the youngins really CAN'T relate to, if they even have ANY memory of it, or able to(?).

No cell phones. Not as we know them/take for granted, as far as daily life goes & for all practical purposes they DIDN'T exist.

No Internet either. I know officially/technically the Internet existed back then, but NOT REALLY. As far as daily life & practical purposes go, there was NO Internet, it DIDN'T exist.

It was a much easier, simpler, & primitive time. On the plus side movies, like the aforementioned BATMAN (1989), STV:TFF, Indie Jones/Last Cruade, Entc Ent al, ACTUALLY stayed & played in theaters for MONTHS. Unlike now:(
