If I wanted to watch a show about negros swinging through the air, I'd watch the National Geographic channel.

Back in civilization, we should keep the characters the way they were originally conceived. That means white, red-headed Mary Jane, white Peter Parker, white jock asshole Flash Thompson, and white Ned Leeds. Not Ned/Gonk the fat, diabetic Asian sidekick.

You want to create a slew of black/brown characters to get BLM dumbfucks like HerbalTea to buy a ticket? Fine, be my guest. Give 'em Miles Morales, who's only distinguishing feature is his skin color. He has no unique rouges gallery, no memorable villains of his own, no reason to exist outside of appeasing the Diversity Mob. But he's a brown mutt, so that's something for HerbalTea to get moist about.

Although wouldn't these new brown diversi-characters fit better in a DCEU film that introduces Gorilla Grodd and his ape army as villains?

For the record, I disavow The Flashlight and set him forward as a prime example of how not to present one's opinion on a matter.

If ever for any reason we appear to have any overlap in our opinions on any kind of issue, please be aware that this is purely coincidental and I will certainly strive to put forth MY opinion with a million times more humility, grace, and compassion than he has ever demonstrated in here.

I know you wrote that hoping it would upset me but one, you're a moron and I take what you say about as seriously as I take my 3 year old niece, and two, things that are true upset people more than ridiculous vulgarity, hence your obvious asshurt over the Browning of established white characters. That's something that is actually happening more and more and there isn't damn thing you can do about it. The studios don't give a shit what the redneck demo thinks. The only people who care about upsetting you assclowns are the people who sell Budweiser and outdoor commodes. We might see a black 007 soon and if that happens no white characters are safe.

Also we do have a movie coming out about apes swinging from trees and the leader is played by a white guy so, :fap: and eat a dick.

As a general rule I avoid super hero movies. They were always dumb but they have been getting worse for some time now.

 Complaining and whining about comic book characters in movies doesn't really do much for this alt-reich tough guy attitude you've recently adopted.

You may think it does but in reality you look like more of a bitch than ever. :itsokay:

Is this movie as bad as it looks? I wanted to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last weekend but it was already out of theaters. I had to choose between Spiderman and Wonder Woman and went with the latter. Wonder Woman was surprisingly good and a fresh spin on the played out superhero movie format.

I think the only comment I've made anywhere near this one is that Lois Lane should have dark or black hair, so here goes.

We're humans. Sight is a huge part of how we perceive our world around us, and how we perceive others. And the face is a huge part of how we identify others. And hair is part of the face.

Superhero comic books use symbols a lot. Hundreds of issues, thousands of panels, plus movies or TV, with the same detail showing up, the brain is trained to associate that detail with that character. The character becomes iconic and the detail goes along for the ride. So you see that S, or even just the color scheme arranged just so on a cupcake, you know it's Superman. You see a stylized black bat against yellow, you know it's Batman instinctively.

I know very little about Spider-man, but even I know Mary Jane is a white girl with red hair. You show me a random comic book panel with a young woman with that red hair in it, I know immediately it's Mary Jane. That's how integral it is to her character, that it makes her instantly recognizable. It's the equivalent of a non-Trekkie saying "Well, I know Spock is the one with the ears."

Show me a blonde, or an Asian, or whatever, and tell me it's Mary Jane, my response will at best be "Huh. You sure? You really sure? Oookay then." It's the equivalent of Spock having round ears, or Lois Lane being a ski instructor, or Superman hiding behind a fake goatee instead of glasses. You could do it, sure, but why? Is the reason good enough to justify confusing people?

This has been going on for thousands of years. Look at old religious art. Nobody knows what any of the twelve disciples looked like, but paint a key in Saint Peter's hand and bam! Even illiterate peasants know that's Saint Peter. Associating key details (no pun intended) with individuals is part of how the brain works, and keeping certain details consistent throughout a character's history makes it easier on the audience to recognize who's who.

So, you know, this doesn't have to be about racism, or even about insisting Everything Must Stay The Same Forever. It's just the way we're wired.

It's racist to give people false hope. For example, deluding black women into believing they can be programmers. :)

Thanks for taking the trouble to explain in such detail. I still disagree, for a number of reasons.

First, you don't get to claim your attitude as 'just the way humans are wired' when half of the posters in this thread, all humans, have a different attitude.

Second, you don't get to say it isn't about racism when the one defining difference between these two attitudes is that one is concerned about the difference between two races where the other isn't. That doesn't mean that I think you are a raving nazi. It just means that race matters to you in one context where it does not matter to me.

Third, pointy ears, the Bat signal and the S for Superman are all unusual and defining elements of what makes the respective characters different from everyone else. Being white is not the same as being from outer space, and it is not among MJ's defining characteristics. It does not matter to her plot, and it is simply false to say that she has been consistently drawn that way; examples have already been posted in this thread.

Ultimately, thinking of MJ as the white girl is not like thinking of Spock as the guy with the pointy ears. It is more like thinking of him as the white guy -- insufficient to even pick him out among the rest of the cast in most scenes.

If that's true, why open a thread about a superhero movie just to tell us about it?

I know three black female programmers and they almost make as much as I make (I make more than most white male programmers do anyway, so that's not significant).

Given the choice between a movie with dozens of hot women and teenage boy, I think I went with the right call.

I know you like really like the new Spider-Man, but please don't get caught jerking off in the theater. At least cover up with a coat or something.

For the record, I don't really have a dog in this fight, as I don't particularly care about Spiderman. (Edit: I might have to see this movie eventually, though, given the reviews in MC.)

The underlying process is what I refer to as "just the way humans are wired". Different people give differing levels of importance to any given detail.

It doesn't have to be about racism, is my (long-winded) point.

Then we are in agreement. :)

    Pretentious. :dayton:

Funny, I don't remember you ever swearing allegiance to me.

What could possibly lead you to believe that I care what anybody on this dipshit site thinks of my opinions or the ways in which I express them?

 So, you think you're claiming some kind of moral victory by promising to be a milquetoast?

Who do you think you're impressing? Who's favor are you trying to win? Is a stamp of approval from the likes of Dickynoo, Anna & John really important to you?

The day I ever enter their good graces is the day I know I've failed at the Game of Wordforge.

See, the thing is, whenever you pop up and dare to express your opinion on abortion or gay marriage, you get the same hysterical, profane reaction I do regardless of how politely you state your position. You're always going to be the asshole Christian worshiping the imaginary sky faerie because you haven't bought into Planned Parenthood's talking points, or because you don't fall in line with the rest of progressive liberal sociopolitical agenda.

And it won't matter to the Dickynoo's or the John's or the Anna's of Wordforge how humble, gracious or compassionate you are.

When Wordforge finally blinks out of cyber existence because someone forgot to pay GoDaddy the rent money, is there some Good Citizenship medal you're going to win?

    Nothing, as usual.

A lot of words dedicated to telling anyone you can get to listen that I don't matter.

You sure I don't matter, just a teeny weeny little bit?

You're a troll who's been playing the Black Panther "whitey better watch his back, I'm gonna git you sucka!" character for at least a year now.

Pandering to racial & identity politics is a fad that will eventually fade, and one that is already seeing diminishing returns. It's become a cliche, and at worst a parody of itself. Hollywood affirmative action.

No doubt, movie Spiderman will make a boatload of money. Unfortunately, sales of Marvel comics have gone into the shitter. And while it may not be accurate to lay all the blame on pandering to the racial & identity politics crowd (shitty art & writing, crappy mega-crossover "events," killing off beloved legacy characters), it's a trend that has certainly alienated a large section of it's customer base.

Hollywood only cares about one color - green. I vote with my wallet. I don't buy asian teenager Hulk, or muslim Ms. Marvel, or Iron Shaniqua, or gay Iceman. There's a reason boycott threats work.

And you know this because you have a seat on the Disney board of directors?

So, you don't think studios care about whether their movies appeal to flyover country? Well, maybe they don't, given that most of them are liberal progressives, but at their core they're business people in the business of making money. You don't make money if middle America doesn't buy tickets.

You mean, the companies who pay the studios millions for product placements, and the right to have Wonder Woman on every box of Playtex tampons on the shelves of Wal-Mart?

Yeah, they don't care what Budweiser thinks. :dayton:

Sorry, Idris Elba will have to wait a while longer. :sob:

Oh, but wait. Does he count? He's British, after all. Casting Brit Blacks doesn't pass BLM muster because Brit Black can't convey the unique experience of being an oppressed American negro. Just like the Brit Black who starred in Get Out. Sam Jackson was all constipated over that.

Kind of like when your boyfriend wants to go see Cars 3. It's not worth putting up with his tiny little temper tantrum, is it?
