I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet.

Alex Kurtzman Sets Five-Year CBS TV Studios Pact, Will Oversee Expanded ‘Star Trek’ Universe

    Variety
has learned that the studio behind “Star Trek: Discovery” has signed Alex Kurtzman to a new five-year overall deal that will see him supervise the expansion of CBS’ “Star Trek” franchise for television, developing new series, mini-series and other content opportunities, including animation.

To that end, sources say there are currently multiple shows set within the “Star Trek” universe already in development.

The potential new shows are said to include:

    • A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo currently serve as co-showrunners on the Hulu-Marvel series “Runaways” and are best known for creating shows like “Gossip Girl” and the CW’s reboot of Dynasty.
    • A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
    • A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story. Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh. He was famously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and again in the film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.” Benedict Cumberbatch then played the character in the 2013 film “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
    • An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.

Whoops! I haven't kept up with that thread because I haven't finished season 1 yet.

    Thanks!

Kudos to @Diacanu for breaking the news first.

None of those series concepts look at all promising.

    Naveen Andrews for Khan please!!!

Also, for the animation, I still like the post-V'ger missions (though I'd prefer a live-action series with Luke Hemsworth as Kirk) for some original crew action but I suspect something more "out there"

Also think the anthology idea might come back and that this season's Section 31 angle might be a dry run for a series built around Georgeau...

I agree, none of these will live up to the high bar that JJ Abrams set with Star Trek 2009.

Worrisome. I'd love some more post-Nemesis trek, but Stewarts desire to be an action hero is a big part of what made Nemesis so awful in the first place. :flow:

He’s 77 now. If he’s coming back the I doubt it will be to run around shooting phasers at every Klingon in sight.

The extended dune buggy and romulan fighter sequences were horrible enough, and Stewart was able to film both sitting down. :yuck:

I think a fair number of aging male stars see themselves as being the next Liam Neeson in Taken.

Personally I'm looking forward to him taking command of the USS Nakitoma Plaza just in time for Christmas...

Maybe get Bruce Willis in as the ineffectual/corrupt/naive Admiral the Federation has a preference for.

Curious to see what comes of these. The idea of Starfleet Academy has been knocking about since the 80's, and has never gone further than the internet screaming Star Trek 90210!

Not sure I'm enthused at Stewart's return to the fold, Nemesis showed he was better keeping his nose out of the whole process, and you can bet he'd wanting a lot more involvement than "shut up and read the script Patrick"

Personally I'd like to see a couple of anthology type series - I think the B5 episode "Deconstruction of Falling Stars" would make a fine reference point for one, mapping out the future as well as fixing the depressing ennui of the Q that VOY gave us.

There were a lot of big parts, to be fair.

Doesn't have to be post-Nemesis Trek if it's the cartoon.

It could also be just a cameo . . . which brings PAD's New Frontier series to mind. Now there's a sobering thought . . .

In my opinion, Patrick Stewart or at least the production staff of ST:TNG's fascination with him became a major problem in the later years of TNG. They were so convinced that he deserved an Emmy award that a number of episodes and scenes written and produced were blatant "trolling" for Stewart.

This just got me thinking about the rationale behind some VOY episodes...

Stopped clock syndrome, but you're right!

They've been trying to rip off The Wrath of Khan almost since it was released. Starfleet Academy is another is another perrenial idea that gets brought up and inevitably dropped - because it's crap. And animation is either going to be for kids, or better as live action.

What if they brought Star Trek back to TV in the vein of how NBC used to air their Mystery Movies in the 70s? Have 5 to 8 90 minute t0 2 hour Star Trek stories a year. There are many ways & time periods in which these stories could be told. I'm thinking of the 1970s NBC Mystery Movie rotating lineup that consisted of COLUMBO, McCLOUD, McMILLAN & WIFE, & BANACEK for how to air these STAR TREK stories.

You're a fool if you think Trek couldn't benefit from the freedom provided by an animated series. How many great ideas have been abandoned because they would have been too expensive to film? How many actors are no longer capable of portraying their classic characters in live action, but could easily do so for an animated production?

I can envision an Academy miniseries working artistically, but financially?
