I'm tempted. If I just put every word I'd usually post on WF into such a novel ... well, -J would be happy I guess. I wonder if I should try to do it in English, could only be good and after all, I'm used to it.

Btw what about a little 'parallel' NaNoWriMo on WF? As in collaboratively reaching those 50.000 words and have a continuous story we can be proud of? I could start one if people would participate (and not derail it).

I wasn't going to do it after the disaster of last year, but I have a concept and a strategy this time. :techman:

I'm doing my own novel this time around, so prolly wouldn't have time to contribute to one here.

    Seriously dude, signup.

I know you hate social situations and all that the the NaNoWriMo meetups (at least the ones I went to last year) are pretty fun. :)

If you are planning to participate in the writing effort anyway, Diacanu, you should sign up, if only to escape public ridicule here - you know not signing up will be seen as an attempt to be able to chicken out at any time.

It sounds like a decent way to get into the habit of writing daily. You write daily for a month, and after that you are so used to it you can start writing your real novel. You shouldn't try to do that during NaNoWriMo, it's too much pressure. Just experiment with genres, styles, ideas, whatever.
Not that you couldn't write that great American or European novel in that time.. Goethe's "[size=-1]The Sorrows of the Young Werther" was written in 4 weeks. But he probably didn't have a problem sitting down behind his desk on a daily basis anyway.

Diacanu, especially given that you don't have a job, I don't see a reason at all for you not to do it. Seriously, what are you going to do instead?

I'll sign up if you do (and we all know how little freetime I have).

I'm going to sign up. Maybe especially because I've got the idiotic notion I should be 'above' competitions like that. But I have to admit I've got a severe discipline problem where writing is concerned.(erhm..well, where anything is concerned, really. Thinking of it, after three months, I really should repair my bike) I haven't got a clue why. Well, my internet addiction is one, of course. Strange how you can tell people you're addicted to internet and nobody takes it seriously. But during bad periods, I can easily spend 8 hours a day behind the computer doing nothing of significance. So I should do anything to turn that around again and make myself fire up the wordprocessor instead.

2000 words a day is not much, that's about three hours if I write by hand. Of course, usually I throw away a lot of that afterwards, but during NaNoWriMo I won't have to, as I won't set any standard for quality, it will purely be meant to spend those hours writing. That also means my speed will go up a lot. Plus I will be using the computer to write, which adds even more speed. If I type without thinking too much, I can crank out 1400 to 1500 words per hour, though I think I probably won't be able to keep that up for a long time, and I am bound to get stuck now and then. So if I spend half an hour thinking for each hour of writing, I can still get nearly 1000 words an hour, so that means two hours a day for NaNoWriMo. I am used to 3 hours a day already (well, not a day, as that would mean I already do it daily, while sticking to a daily schedule is the problem), so I am certain I can make it. I am just putting my money on being able to work on my existing story as well in the hours that remain. Of not, I could start to feel I am wasting my time on a nonsense-story while I could be working on the real thing. Still, that sounds like just another excuse not to do NaNoWriMo. And how much writing would I get done then?

I won't be writing in English though. My English is far too rusty and my vocabulary far too limited. Besides, I want to write in Dutch, get published in Dutch, so it would be a waste of experience not to do NaNoWriMo in Dutch.

So here goes... I'll consider it therapy: finishing something at last.

If it's as good at keeping me out, as this forum appears to be at keeping us safe from your insulting presence, I won't have anything to worry about the next time I try to register. Take your trashy mouth to the red room and lock the door behind you.

Signed up. Am thinking about a plot...

Let's see: 50,000 words. If I work 22 days on it, that's about 2272 words/day. 22 chapters times 2272 words is 50,000 words. If I type 40 words per minute, it will take just under an hour to get 2272 words. But with "thinking-about-it" time, that's probably 2-3 hours.

    No problem.

    Yikes.

Well, so far I have ideas for two scenes and a very, very vague plot.

I am perhaps a little underprepared. :marathon:

Why does everybody think the plot is the problem? I have plot ideas on a daily basis, but I don't have the concentration or focus to actually write them out ... sad.

I get plot ideas, but they're always for the cool, standout parts of the story. It's the bits in between that are the problem.

Example: Writing a Doctor Who fanfic a while back. Starts off with a nippy little scene in the TARDIS where a drunken Doc and Captain Jack are having a late-night jam session (with a guitar the Doc got from Hendrix) and wake Rose up. Then the Cloister Bell tolls and the Doc realizes someone nearby is really screwing with Time.

Then I have a scene worked out where they meet the bad guy (someone from the Doc's past), but actually writing the "Get out of the TARDIS, explore, meet unfriendly goons, get taken to evil mastermind" bit and making it interesting enough to keep the reader's attention is the tricky part. Hell, I can't even make bits like that keep my attention.

I'm kinda interested in signing up for this, but I don't honestly know if I could fit it in around my work commitments. The writing, maybe, but the thinking?

Besides, 50000 words is the same amount as my Ph.D thesis! :soma:
