Let's just look at his latest campaign ad and see if folk can still stick their fingers in their ears and pretend this is normal... it's goddamn Willie Horton all over again! https://edition.cnn.com/2018/10/31/politics/donald-trump-immigration-paul-ryan-midterms/index.html
How fucking dumb are you to not understand it's a matter of degree - of perspective - of context? There is a huuuuuuuge difference between Trumps filter-free boasting & bluster and advocating lethal violence. Suddenly everyone is employing binary thinking. If a Democrat politician says the same shit Trump says it's a "take it with a grain of salt - everyone knows what he really means" rationalization. Granted other Democratic politicians are not the president. I do agree Trump is not very "presidential" nor tactful nor dignified etc. etc. etc. but he's not the Hitler the left makes him out to be.
You are employing binary thinking "if it's a democrat..." Maybe if you gave examples of democrats encouraging various degrees of violence against others I could see the nuances you're referencing. I might have blinders on, but the shit trump is spouting is prodigious and unprecedented.
have we ever had a president (Republican or Democrat) who conducted himself the way Trump does? So we really have nobody to compare him to - other than the "go to" Hitler reference. Past presidents could keep their thoughts to themselves. And in today's 24 hour new cycle/social media this inability to "zip it" is not doing Trump any favors. Kind of like your Miranda Rights "what you say can and will be used against you" on steroids in today's world! You should tread lightly and play it close to the vest or get ready for some epic hate heading in your direction. I'm betting the next president we get doesn't say a fucking word in public without running it through (and taking the advice of) their handlers.
So, no, you don't have anything to support your position that: " Suddenly everyone is employing binary thinking. If a Democrat politician says the same shit Trump says it's a "take it with a grain of salt - everyone knows what he really means" rationalization." Doesn't have to be a president. Give me a soundbite from some low level liberal if you want.
Here's what you aren't getting. Nobody is seriously saying that Trump wants his supporters to shoot up places of worship, or that he's actively advocating LETHAL political violence (although he has been advocating political violence...which you know because you glossed over that part with the "filter-free boasting & bluster" bullshit), but people get held responsible for shit they say. Al Sharpton caught a lot of shit when his "filter-free boasting & bluster" lead to rioting. He doesn't get a free pass either. Trump has called for violence, and some of his supporters have been answering that call. Personally, I don't think he really intended on anyone taking him seriously. I think he was just trying to make himself look like a bad ass...but if some of them take it farther than he intended, he still bears some responsibility.
Exactly. People don't resort to political violence without being fed a rhetoric. For instance, just this week there was a group of men charged with a attempt to murder Somalian immigrants were in court and in that case their motivation was Trump's Anti-Muslim rhetoric. In fact, talking of Muslims, since Trump's election polls show that US public opinion towards Muslims has become increasingly negative. I wouldn't mind betting similar figures for attitudes towards immigrants. Then, as I mentioned above, there is the huge surge in hate crimes since he came to power. This has also happened at the same time as hate groups have enjoyed a 20% increase in support. How can people be so stupid not to realise words have consequences? Trump has fanned the flames of social division and bigotry, and those who helped open this Pandora's Box, like Oldfella, are too cowardly to recognise and accept what they have helped unleash.

So, turns out the refugee aid organisation that was the target of this attack helped bring Jared Kushner's grandparents here back during the Holocaust. Has he said shit about the shootings? Has he fuck.
when Trump deliberately says false things that he KNOWS will set off people to varying degrees, some violently so, and continues to do so after the evidence is in: yes, he is directly responsible. The historians and anthropologists who study such things literally have a term for it, Stochastic terrorism, that long pre-dates Trump because the maneuver itself is not new to him.
In the 1930's, the NYT wrote puff-piece profiles on Hitler, and in 1938 20k Americans attended a Nazi rally in MSG. Hitler, wasn't !HITLER! ...until he was. And by then it was far too late.
well that's true but as Jim Wright so eloquently notes, ignoring bullshit is how you get much more bullshit. That's OUR role in this whole drama. Whether or not Trump is just a blowhard or legitimately does have fascist ambitions, he MIGHT be either - and if indeed he is the latter and the whole population just rolls their eyes and says "Trump being Trump" - he WILL win and it will be very much too late before sleepers like you wake up to what is happening. it's the push back against even the POSSIBILITY of fascism that, more than anything, keeps it at bay. But you go ahead and sleep well, you're a older white dude in the south - I'm sure you'll be fine either way.
I wish I had a link handy, there was a story just in the last week from one of those behind the scenes sources, the gist of it was that some advisor told Trump he shouldn't say the things he was just saying because it would get someone killed, and Trump's response was basically to shrug and Bannon, who was in the conversation, said "Darkness is good"
Here's a link if you want a clear-headed commentary on the current state of affairs, from a man you cannot fairly call a fragile snowflake. He sees it, and he says you're a goddamn fool if you don't. http://www.stonekettle.com/
