Would it be possible to add a "neutral" option to rep? Something where a poster could make a comment without it counting as positive or negative?

Since that's how newbies show up in rep, it should be possible. But we've an awful lot of hacks already, apparently.

If you can't be arsed enough to give a pos or a neg, why bother with the rep key at all? Hit the quote button and enter a post.

Since you're one of the reasons I started this thread, why does it matter so much to you how I choose to comment on a post?

I originally turned off my rep during the polarslam/Face/baba/JohnM rep wars, because I thought they were childish.

Apparently to some, though, rep is Really Important. :garamet:

    Wait a minute.

I thought this crap was fixed.

Turn your rep off and it shows up as comments. That's what Zenow does.

Zenow's in the red. That's why his comments are just comments.

Well it seems to you that the rep system is important since you want to give it more features.

I agree with Marso, if a post is worth making a comment on, just make a post replying to it.

I'm guessing the point is more that garamet would like to keep rep turned off and make comments without all the silly accusations that derail discussion. If her comments are rep neutral they'll result in less childishness in response. Right now she gets accused of some sort of hypocrisy on a routine basis for handing out rep while hers is turned off. Short one liners and quick agreement are what's at issue here, not real responses worthy of a post.

    Thank you. That's exactly it.

Sometimes I just want to say "I agree" or "I disagree" without going into anything more. It would be nice to just click once to do that.

To Bailey: The only reason rep is "important" to me is because Marso makes a habit of neg-repping me because it pisses him off that he can't see my rep. He's said as much.

Once again (just like before) that arguement is dumb. If you can take the time to post a one liner in the rep box you can do the same as a regular post. It takes the same amount of time to do both.

And half the time other posters take the rep post and comment on it in a reply and get replied back.

I turned mine off to test it but it still shows up as agree/disagree on screen.

If it won't be fixed like last time then set Garamet to 1 million negative (with rep turned on) that way she can comment without worrying about being knocked into positive territory by mistake and then she can be like Zenow and Darkening who can comment without the nonsense of positive or negatives.

    Agree/disagree - point, click.

But, yeah, why not put me in the red? Doesn't matter to me, solves the problem of my being able to comment without upsetting anyone (even though 90% of my comments are pos-reps), and Marso "wins."

We all win because we don't have to hear this crying nonsense again for what seems like the 100th time from people who supposedly don't care but love to bring the issue up in the Help Desk.

If I were you Garamet I'd purposely aggravate Marso while telling him to fuck off if he didn't like it. In fact I'd go as far as to put a fourth line in my signature with a count of all the times I aggravated him. :diablo:

My suggestion would be to either turn on your rep and play the game in full, or if you want to leave it turned off, refrain from giving rep, good or bad.

You need to decide if you want to be out or in on the whole deal. Halfway is for losers.

I don't want to "play a game" as in driving people into the red or doing the Baba rep-whoring thing. That's why I asked if there was a neutral way to just comment without it counting as some sort of silly little grade-school point system.

But I guess some people just need gold stars.

Let me reiterate - can someone put me in the red so my rep comments don't "count"?

I had the same idea when rep first appeared, and when rep was re-set. For some reason it was always no-no'ed. I think its a good idea, you can add to a thread without bumping it to the top of the lists

You're not really 'adding' to a thread- you are making a personal comment to the other poster that only they are 'guaranteed' to see. I don't know if anyone else does, but I don't recycle back through threads, looking at rep posts for new content. In fact, the thread doesn't even show up bold in the topic list unless there are new posts in it. You can add all the rep comments to a thread that you want, and nobody will even know if there haven't been any new posts.

Another easy solution for Garamet is just to turn her rep on, rep what she wants to, stay out of the rep wars/whoring, etc, and be at peace. If someone else decides to rep her into the red, fine- she says she doesn't care, and that achieves the neutrality of rep comments from her that she's looking for anyway.

Why the fuck are we having a big ass thread about this anyway? It's the freakin' rep system on an internet BBS, for crissake! :jayzus:

Would have to write a hack from scratch as one does not currently exist. If you really care to leave neutral comments, get yourself negged into the red.

The only "advantage" to a neutral rep over a post is that it doesn't bump a thread. In the DB, it makes no difference.

Not quite; there's also no quoted material. Which can make a big difference depending on the number of intervening posts and how much editing the replying poster feels like doing.

Right. Occasionally when I haven't been on the board for a week or three and I'm skimming a few interesting-looking threads of interest, I want to make an inane little comment in several of them for one reason or another. (Usually it's a stupid joke or a minor correction or clarification.) And if I post it, certain people will get annoyed because I dared "bump" threads from 10-20 days ago for "inane" little comments. But the comments don't quite justify awarding someone a + or - either. So neutral comments could be useful.

I don't know how the rep system works, but I assume the code for the dialog box works something like
    Code:
    switch(A,D)
    if A
    then rep++
    if D
    then rep--
    end
(with certain modifications to allow the ABCA system to operate). In which case all that would be needed would be a third radio button that would just let rep == rep.

But maybe the rep system code comes prepackaged, and you can't get into it to make any modifications. I don't know.

Which seems to be a significant advantage for some people.
