From the Sims thread, I was talking about upgrading this PC so the game would run better. Well, for a lengthy-and-not-very-interesting reason, we've decided to ship this PC off to someone more needy (my sister) and we (OH and myself) will be buying a (hopefully) dog's doodahs one to share. Basic requirements are:- I need something for work and quite fancy getting Office 2007 (which we can get added in). Plus I have a whole heap of other programmes that I will no doubt put on at some stage. OH wants a gaming computer and, to be honest, I can find no objection in that We've seen one at Dell that we quite like, but to be honest I don't know an awful lot about whether something is good or not, so we are using price as an indicator. OH knows even less. And we both go at fancy advertising. Which is never good when the salesman has a twirly 'tash and a conman smile. SO, here is what we like the look of. What do you all think? Can I do betterer and is it good for what we need? Because we need something that will take some hammering (if I'm not on it, OH will be). Link
That is an extremely nice PC. That PC is basically faster than most games would ever ask for The only thing that would make me think is the lack of Vista. Im no fan of Vista, and dont intend to install it for some time to come, but if you got it now it would save on upgrade money in the future
Its just the latest operating system. Ive tried it, its ok, looks like winXP but nicer. The main point is, at some point, everyone is gonna have to change over to it. Just like everyone (well, most people) changed from win98 to winXP
Looks like a good computer. It isn't pants. How much memory will you get? I would suggest at least 2 GB. I agree with Dan about the operating system. Upgrading can be a pain so it might be better to get Vista already installed. Have fun!
How much is Vista in £? Also, if I do get this PC, There are some options I haven't the foggiest about. Like: Do I want a 16x DVD +/- RW & 16x IDE DVD ROM Drive or a 16x DVD+/-RW & 48x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive? Do I want a 128MB Ageia™ PhysX™ physics accelerator PCI card?
Look, the processor and graphics card surpass the Sims 2 requirements. The memory, if you get even 2 gb (which should be ridiculously easy with this model!) you'll run the Sims so fast it'll probably kill ya! No wonder it's so expensive! That's one hell of a computer. You can cram 3 TB of hard drive on that damn thing?! Damn... no, you don't need THAT much. You don't even need 500 GB!
Myspecs for new computer include athlon 64 4400 dual core, 250 gig sati harddrive, 2 gig ddr2 memory, 19 inch widescree, geforce 7 256 meg video card and windows vista home edition
£890 ish, but you might want to add some extras that i didnt choose like printer/speakers/better warranty and stuff
A link is hard, im in a 'choosing' process. Not sure if this will work http://configure.euro.dell.com/dell...06926&rbc=D06926&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsftdppdesktop2
Get your computer from a local shop and custom built saves money and better then that intergrated crap
Not many games in the next 5 years are gonna need more than a "Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Duo E6600 Processor (2.4GHz,1066MHz,4MB cache)" That'll keep you at above min spec for yeeeaaars to come
I suggest a athlon 64 dual core summerteah amd makes good processors. They are uusally cheaper then intel
The 9200 Model seems to be the best bet, only thing i would add is the 4GB ram (4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [4x1024]) You can never have enough Ram with the new vista. Sims should run with vista, but some other programs might not right away as a new system. (they will after a few months once support catches up)
That's what harddrive partitions are for and with size of harddrives you can spare a little for a partition.
Falcon Northwest is clearly superior to Alienware. I woudn't buy either, even if I had the cash (I'd rather build it myself), but really Alienware is just inferior to Falcon and its "so-insanely-fast-that-they-lead-every-benchmark-out-there" machines. Their prices are pretty high of course (like alienware). Their pricing categories on the website are labelled "budget box", "bang for the buck", and of course "bragging rights".
