Not sure about the 60's-70's but they were quite effectively killing themselves off in the 80's & 90's.

September 22, 2000 Ronald Gay () entered a gay bar in Roanoke Virginia and opened fire. He claimed he was told by God to kill lesbians and gay men. Fortunately not a massacre, but that was his intention.

So two incidents in 40+ years. Yes, it's a regular Jihad here in the US. You could probably find two incidents of anything happening in a country as big as the US. I wouldn't doubt if two people got hit by comets in 40 years - but it's hardly a fucking epidemic.
