In the two weeks following its release, the Nintendo Wii sold 476,000 units.

Compare that to 200,000 units for the PS3 and a measly 325,902 units for the entire month of November 2005 when the Xbox360 debuted.

Looks like Nintendo has a winner on its hands.

yeah. most people into the video games knew this would happen. it still is dependent on the games that come out for each system. so far only the nintendo wii has a must play game.......which is zelda.
but what will be so special about the wii when sony and xbox copy there controller?

    ^^^ About a $200-$300 difference.

    That's what.

    Nintendo's back, baby!

Sony's pitiful Sixaxis controller is a poor and shameless ripoff of the Wiimote (God, I feel like an idiot for typing that) that most people find to be difficult to use in its intended manner, much like the old Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad that had the same features.

Sony and Microsoft have tried. Nintendo succeeded.

Of course what you neglect to mention is that there aren't ANY Wiis or PS3s left on the shelves either. Every single unit of both consoles is selling out entirely. All this proves is that Nintendo has managed to produce and ship more Wiis than Sony has PS3s.

When you go into Best Buy on any given day and see the Wii console or PS3 on the shelf, then those numbers will mean something.

Granted, but it doesn't explain how Nintendo managed to outsell the Xbox360's debut in less than two weeks.

Plus, Nintendo has all the media buzz right now, not to mention the more competitive price.

    Two questions:
    1. What are the costs of the Wii and PS3?
    2. Does 'Wii' stand for something?

    PS3 - $499 for 20gb version, $599 for the 60gb versionj

Wii - $250 (all these prices are US$)

Wii was chosen partially because of the sound of it's name in English and partially because it's a name that doesn't need translation. The Wii is called the Wii everywhere in the world because of the simplicity of its name. There is also the similarity to the English word "we" which implies the way the Wii is intended to bring people together to play.

The PS3 is already getting flack for the way they rapidly tried to shoehorn motion detection into their controller after the Wii was unveiled.

For this generation at least, the reason the Wii's control scheme will be unique is because games have to be designed with the intention of using this scheme. Even if Sony and Microsoft do release similar controllers for the PS3 and 360, games will still have to be designed with both conventional and motion sensing controls in mind. So that while the Wii is getting games that are specifically designed with this control scheme in mind, the competitors will be getting versions where the motion control is more of a gimmick.

The Wii also requires you to get off of your ass to play.

    This is a good thing.

The PS3 is just a PS2 with Blu-Ray technology and shittier controlled. People just weren't willing to pay $600-$700 for that (though some were willing to pay thousands more).

The XBox 360 was an actual upgrade of the XBox, with better controllers, online stuff, and most importantly--HD. But, it still wasn't as inexpensive or as revolutionary as the Wii. Nintendo took a HUGE chance with the Wii but it seems to have paid off so far.

I'm gonna wait for the HDWii to come out before I buy it.

No, they are sad sad people.

Seriously though, the Wiimote is quite sensitive so you can play the games making really small movements if you want, but at the same time it also detects big movements if you want to get fully into tennis.

Played Wii Sports Tennis last night with a few people in the gaming lounge at work, when you are all standing up and jumping around it is amazingly astonishingly fun, and as you get used to the game you start to pick up on all the details of how to get fine control of where the ball is going to go.

The more I play it, the more impressed I am that they managed to balance the pick up and be able to play straight away aspect with the depth of still learning new things a few days later.

I was in Best Buy yesterday and here's what I saw:

Nintendo Wii - none. Salesgirl said they thought they'd get some in on the 17th, anticipated people lining up overnight to buy it.

PS3 - none. Hysterical laughter when I asked if there was any way to tell when or if they'd get enough in to where you wouldn't have to camp out a week in advance to get one. Forget the PS3 - as far as I can tell, there's nowhere you can get one in Tulsa.

X-Box 360 - there were TWO giant mountains of 360's sitting in the middle of the store that people were bypassing like they didn't exist. Price = $400.

Going beyond game systems, there were about 5 Sony Blu-ray players sitting out on the showroom, about 5 Samsung Blu-ray players, and 3 Toshiba HD-DVD players. None were generating much interest. They weren't even out in the main part of the store, they were hidden back in the "Magnolia" high-end side room.

Yes it does. Same exact thing. Xbox 360 also sold every single unit available for a couple months after it's debut. Nintendo is currently outselling solely because they are cranking out more systems.

 There OUGHT to be mountains of Xbox 360s. They've been out for a year. Most people who want one have one.

It's not so much a controller recall as "call us if you want a new strap".

Nintendo have already started shipping strong straps with the consoles, and really the problem has only occured because of people being way too rough with the controller in the first place.

I just did, but before I noticed you made this post here.

Mainly did it to let any wii owners on this board know they should get their new straps.

Bailey is right though, this isn't an actual recall by a longshot.

The math only counts if there are spare systems sitting around unsold and the Wii is outselling the PS3. That's not the case. Every Wii made is sold, every PS3 is sold, just as it was with the Xbox 360 a year ago.

Your point is debunked, let's move on.

Which is the benefit of not needing bleeding-edge technology. They'll actually be able to produce it at a reasonable capacity.

Personally, I find it very telling that it didn't need to be HIGH-DEF MADNESS! in order to do well. Good gameplay beats good graphics every day of the week.

You'd never know given all the Wii press that it was actually the Xbox 360 that sold the most units in November. I was pretty shocked to see the 360 outsell the Wii by 35,000 units despite being out for a year.

    Wrong.

You need to take into consideration that the Wii was released November 19, so it didn't have a full month of sales. The Wii sold 476,000 units in only 12 days, versus 511,000 units for the Xbox360 for the entire month.

Not too shabby for the Wii.

In any case, it will be interesting to see a year from now which console comes out on top. The Xbox360 has almost a full year's head start, which is certainly an advantage. But the sales momentum and press coverage at the moment definitely favour the Wii.

The PS3 may yet emerge the victor, if they can actually produce enough units to keep a steady and readily available supply in stores, and if there are enough games developed for it.

Doesn't do any good to have a space-age game system if the customer can't ever find one in the stores. A year from now I'll probably be posting about how I saw mountains of PS3's in Best Buy.

That I was shocked or that 511,000 is more than 476,000?

That seems pretty balanced out by the fact that the Xbox 360 has already been out for a year. The PS3 and Wii are still selling to fans and early adopters. The 360 is getting pure user base.

At any rate you didn't have any problem comparing the 360's eight days of sales in November 2005 to the Wii's twelve and PS3's nineteen this year.

I just read Gears of War has sold 2 million copies. I'm not a big fan of Microsoft but any way you cut it this is a good holiday season for them.
