Northern , but then those hicks in New England sound kinda doofy.

I say NY, NJ and Chicago sound right. All the rest sound dumb.

Exactly! The test I tell everyone to take is this. Turn on the TV and see who sounds like you. I know that I speak like most of the well spoken newscasters.

But some of our friends here sound like HeeHaw rejects and friends of Larry the Cable Guy.

How come sitcoms are not loaded with southern sounding people?

On TV you hear what is correct. Not some dumb ass drawl.

Down here, when ever there's a tornado or a flood, the national news media finds the most inbred, bucktooth, country retard it can to interview "on the scene".

"Yea Ius 'asettin' over yonder own muh frownt powerch, 'an up come a twister an took Momma up and set 'er down a mahl away at the church."

    Southerners, usually.

Although there's not much variation for such a big place.

Nah; that's a Queens/Long Island accent, and a pretty extreme case thereof.

I gotta agree with that. I meant to say Bayside, not Bay Ridge. And I think of the big hair girls of Bensonhurst. So its over there a little bit too.

I grew up in Brooklyn/Queens and Long Island.

There's no such thing as a "Northern accent". New England is distinct from New York is distinct from New Jersey, etc.

Not true of southern Jersey, though. They sound more like Delawarans.

Jersey seems to be one of the few states that has three or four distinctive geographical accents.

There are different accents here in the South too. My Virginia Gentry accent has picked up some Tennessee traits, and I probably sound something towards Shelby Foote, though not quite as pronounced as his Mississippi accent.

One of these days, I hope to chat on the phone with Elwood to check out his Alabama drawl.

Flashing back to my mother's father's lingo. He was born in Brooklyn and later settled in Da Bronx. Guy sounded like Archie Bunker, only less understandable and more bigoted.

I was watching Star Trek one night, and halfway through the show he siddenly goes "Ya know what'cher watchin' dere is de imPOSSible, dontcha?"
