OTOH, "straight to Netflix" wasn't an option for My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

    Jupiter's Legacy from Netflix.
I heard about this ages ago, but I never heard that they were even shooting it, now here it is!
(I think the generations of the family are supposed to represent the ages of comics history)

Been semi-binging Jupiter's Legacy - it's basically two shows within the same hour. The modern day plot is, IMO, tedious bordering on boring.
The 1930 plot line is, to me, pretty fascinating.

But some pretty nice casting though.

By the way, the buzz is kinda right. The older generation is kind of "Golden Age" although that was pretty much ended by a betrayal some years before when this story takes place.
But the offspring are sometimes "conflicted good guys" and sometimes "fuck being a hero period." which is, from what I understand, a sort of a step beyond the whole "Nightwing doubts Batman's methods" - or even Red Hood, who kills but from the perspective of"hero" like The Punisher rather than being totally unconcerned or, in some cases, outright criminals as in this.

Binged Jupiter's Legacy in one sitting. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good and it easily could have been. I think that splitting up the plot between the Golden Age and the Modern Age made the series actively worse.

The other problem is that the series centers around the philosophical issue of "When is it OK for heroes to kill?" which could be interesting if done well. But the trouble is that it is not done well. The main heroes take the position of "It's never OK, not even in the face of a threat that has already killed multiple heroes and potentially might wipe out half a state."

And that seems on the face of it such an absurd position to be the default, but beyond that, it doesn't bother to support that position or really work through the ramifications when heroes and anti-heroes kill.

People may be familiar with the graphic novel Kingdom Come. It is set in a DC Universe where the OG heroes have essentially turned over the main leadership to the next generation of heroes who basically are reckless thrillseekers indifferent to actual heroism or a central moral code. That leads to a large-scale tragedy, which leads to Superman and many of the OG heroes setting up a benevolent prison for bad and good guys, leading to a conflict between him and forces led by Batman and possible armageddon. That book deals with some of the same themes as Jupiter's Legacy, but of course way smarter. One can understand exactly why Superman has taken the steps he does, why Batman opposes him, and so on and so forth.

Is THAT what they were going for? I haven’t read the entire novel of Kingdom Come. I started it a couple times. And watched the first 2 or 3 episodes of Jupiter’s Legacy.

What I believe each is attempting is to ... reconcile 50s, 60s, even 70s love for and “reverence” for superhero’s with real world problems of today.

The problem is that comic book superheroes cannot possibly fix/resolve/rectify society’s problems today. Sure, we still have thieves and mobsters and Nazis. But, modern, real world problems have taken a turn that cannot be resolved with idealistic “do-gooders”. Today’s problems are economic disparity and the anger of the masses frustrated by an inability to ever “get ahead” or that one group is given a hand (affirmative action), but not another group (poor white men).

Comic books aren’t going to resolve these issues and DC needs to stop trying if it wants to remain relevant today and in the future. I watch movies and tv and read comics to ESCAPE reality. I don’t want them trying to tell me why superhero’s are irrelevant today and why their kids are acting like spoiled children.

The most cynical take on "superheroes vs reality" I've seen is "The Pro".
About a hooker who gets the superpowers, and she just uses them to be a better hooker, and the heroes try to get her to be a hero, but she tells them to go fuck themselves.
The movie rights for it were optioned forever ago, but I haven't heard anything.
She's a gritty character, you'd need a really gutsy actress to do it.

Remember the "heroes" part of superheroes. They fight crime and weird menaces, but they're also supposed to serve as inspirations for doing what's right. Superman being the prime example.

I am pretty sure the person behind the graphic novel Jupiter's Legacy is based on must have been familiar with and was consciously thinking of Kingdom Come when he was working on it.

If not, it just is a coincidence that both are stories about the old generation of superheroes and their morals versus the new generation of superheroes and theirs. The difference being that KC had a lot more shades of gray and more compelling characters. It helps to have actual Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman rather than proxies like the Utopian, Lady Liberty and Brainwave/Skyfox.

I've not even heard of that. Is it a comic/graphic novel? or an animated series?

    A single issue comic.
I don't know what channel they could animate it on, it's pretty damned NC-17 rated.
Although, The Boys gets away with a lot.

There was quite a bit of that in the original silver age, before WWII took over and changed the narratives in both the world and comics.

Clark Kent's original job was as a journalist that went after corruption in the city. especially as it harmed the common man. Superman then dealt with those enemies, but Kent's role as the journalist was every bit as important in the original comics and serials.

Later on in 1947 there was an incredibly important radio serial, Superman vs the Clan of the Fiery Cross, where Supes actively took on the KKK and pointed out the disparity in men returning home from WWII backing Nazi ideals such as racial discrimination and purity.

It should be no surprise - the creators of Supes were both young Jewish men who were well aware of what was happening in Germany, and how that sentiment was growing at home.
