Let's be honest, they'd be better just having them do impressions of synchronized swimming on the grass for 120 minutes and then do some penalities.
It's a shame that Japan lost to Paraguay on PK's. That Japanese keeper was so close to stopping the first couple shots!
On to the round of 8! I'm picking Germany over Argentina in a thriller of a game, Spain handling Paraguay, Brasil over Netherlands (even though I'm rooting for the Orange), and Uruguay over Ghana.
^ The argies are much better than the Krauts. Everyone thinks that the Germans are shit hot at the mo, but the fact is they aren't as good as people think. If England can stick two goals past them during an awful run for then British and they can get wiped in some of their group games then they aren't up to the level of the argies.
Spaniards come out on top - they successfully conned the ref in getting a Portugal player sent off for no reason, with a wonderful piece of simulation from Capdevilla, or whatever his name is. Well done Spain, that's now the second opposition player you've got sent off at the tournament by tricking the ref. Hope you're proud.
Did he even get a chance to be disgraceful? The minute quiroz took the big striker off, he stuck Ronaldo up top on his own. The rest of the team were too busy playing in their own half that the ball didnt go near him. Definatley a better result for the tournament that Spain won, at least you got the feeling they actually wanted to try and score.
He tried two or three outrageous shots from 50 yards which trickled over the endline despite having team-mates in better positions. He dived a number of times, tried silly tricks that didn't come off, and refused to track back. As usual, it was all about himself and the chance for glory, and fuck the team. His is not a captains personality. Mourinho won't stand for that shit next season. Hopefully he gets kicked out the door to a second-tier European club where he can't ponce around quite so easily.
Back in England, Roy Hodgson is set to become Liverpool's manager! What a depressing appointment. Mid-table mediocrity, here we come!
What no-one seems to be able to explain is the disparity between the qualifying campaign and the world cup. In qualifying we looked good, played well and got results. In fact IIRC we had the best campaign of any team in europe. Then when it comes to the cup we look tired, lost and clueless.
Let me see, out of Liverpool and Roy Hodgson only one of those made to it a cup final last season... Given Liverpool are the most firmly in the shit of the traditional Big 4, scraped in the UEFA by the skin of their teeth, only troubled the latter stages of one cup last season, have no CL next season, little money to spend, and two squabbling owners desperate to sell up at a price no one wishes to buy at, and well... Be grateful you found someone of a decent pedigree to manage you. It was him or King Kenny, and after his and Barnes bogus journey at Celtic a few years back, he'd probably end up doing a Keegan after being found out in the modern EPL.
Capello's methods work great in short periods, over a longer duration they just piss the players off. Especially the mollycoddled twats we have. He really ought to have sent them packing for the occasional day with the WAGs or a swift pint, the routine he placed them under simply didn't work for weeks on end.
Hmmm, going to have to try and see how I can watch the matches this weekend as I'm off round the t'other halfs neck of the woods and she's not exactly a fan of footy... I'll be able to catch most of Brazil/Netherlands, but the rest we'll see... Least I've ensured I'm free for the final!
Brazil is out! Netherlands advances! Netherlands haven't beat Brazil in the WC since 1974. GREAT match, I love seeing the underdogs win.
One of the few good calls by referees in this WC, Melo let his team and country down with that unecessary, dirty play. Great to see Brazil knocked out. I would love to see a Netherlands vs Argentina final.
