So, I'm on OkCupid this morning and this guy answered questions like this:

    Are you Christian? Yes

Would you date an atheist? No.

Should gay marriage be legal? No.

Would you date someone for sex whose status was married or seeing someone? Yes

I couldn't help it. I had to send him a message. "You won't date an atheist, but you would date a christian woman who cheats on her husband while denying the benefits of marriage to those you deem unworthy?"

I can't wait to see if he answers and what his response would be.

Well, all this does, is back my contention that religion does little to nothing to impart some superior morality on people.

Good, bad, weak, they're gonna do what they're gonna do, and only learning from life, and evolving keeps 'em on the straight and narrow.

Unless they're wired up to be sociopaths, then they're just broken.

Of course, seeing as though there was no factor in existence forcing you to interact with this cat, minding your own business would have just been out of the question.

You're right. Jenee has come to the conclusion that this one individual Christian is an asshole. Marso condemns an entire religion based on a few assholes.

    Big difference.

Finish it. It's the red room.

I've seen your posts. You're just as bad as this guy. As well as apostle and The Lonely Squire.

People like you give a bad name to Christians - many of whom I have much respect for.

I'm not a churchgoer, and have never claimed to be.

But as I recall, God didn't have much to say about being nice to dim wits - and if you were starving I'd buy you at least a bowl of soup, if you hit me I wouldn't hit you back. So don't really see your point (though you may want to invest in a narrower set of paint brushes, one hypocrite ain't enuf for a conclusion, and you erroneously caught an agnostic with your first try at a brush stroke).

My original point was not that I in any way disputed her analysis of the guy's character- merely her seeming need to call him on it like he was in the Red Room at Wordforge or something. MYOB makes the world a much more peaceful place for everyone!

Garamet....come on that is not true.

Jenee did the exact same sort of broad-brushing that Marso does on a regular basis!!

How can you possibly claim she only condemns that individual with a title like this:

Online dating gets to the truth of Christians.

That points the finger at the entire religion, not one hypocrite.

First problem with your argument is the contention that it has to be "superior". That's your read. Even here, the religious folk don't, as a rule, hammer their faith and it's trappings as "superior", but you invoke that to impugn them if they fall short of your expectations of what they should be.

More interestingly is that your lack of religious involvement has failed to impart any sort of superior sense of social decorum. If the kind of enlightenment which results from being liberated from the yoke of religion is such a good thing, what happened to you? Even when you're able to engage people with whom you disagree on the subject, you regularly descend into insults and condescension irregard to the fact that they've conducted themselves in earnest.

Your contempt for religion is more about you working out your personal demons on what you see as an "easy target" than "spreading the enlightenment".

But hey, 48k posts of, "I'm right and you're stupid" can't be wrong, can they?

If they're not following some "golden path", what's the point?
Why object to the naughty orgies the Romans are having if they don't think their tribe has a better way?

Odd, I'm not the one stalking people in rep throwing "dried up cunt", and "Mick", around.
So, I don't know where you get off thinking you're a charmer.

    Pot, kettle, black.

Also, I'm not exactly burning shit down saying Gaw-duh said was a good idea.

Likwise, I don't credit the Devil with my fuckups.

I'm not a perfect person, I don't claim to be, never have.

Never said atheism makes you perfect either.

It would have to be a philosophy to make claims along those lines.

But, as we all know by now (or should) it's the merely lack of belief in Gods.

Yes it is. Marso is very clear on his views of muslims.

Yep. There are so many decent christians it is totally unfair. But, at the same time America does seem to have it's fair share of christian whackos, when churchgoers in Europe tend to be a lot calmer and inoffensive. Why is this?
    Yep.

What pisses me off about the OP is the tone against the OKCupid member as if it's his religion is to blame. The actually reality is that he is a dirtbag and that is the be all and end all of it.

If anything its an inferior morality because, clearly, in some cases like this it's not self-determined, it's just "what you have to do".

    Eh. maybe.

Perhaps I'm too charitable but I wrote that off to being sloppy with her wording. It's not that uncommon a thing for a thread title.

Yes, taken literally that's what she's saying. I just didn't take it that literally.

I absolutely argue against the notion that all Christians are hypocritical, judgmental, "broken" to use Dicky's slur.

But i also have to agree, from my experience, tat a significant minority, possibly a slight majority, are all too willing to display that kind of mental disconnect.

This is actually an excellent question (and an accurate analysis, though of course there are numerous exceptions on both sides) and I would love to hear what some people think about it.

I'll have to think about it myself as well. For right now, I don't have any good answers off the top of my head.
