Have you read the bill itself, yourself? Just out of curiosity.

:spock: Let's see about that, shall we?

    References to other laws:

    s. 1.01(3) - "The word “person” includes individuals, children, firms, associations, joint adventures, partnerships, estates, trusts, business trusts, syndicates, fiduciaries, corporations, and all other groups or combinations."
    s. 11.0455 - Means "via a website set up for that purpose" in many many words.
    s. 112.32155 - Means same as above, but specifically "via the website for registering lobbyists"

Newline placement in the original. Indentation mine. Lack of indentation, the board's; I tried. You can see the intended indentation in the reply box if you quote it.

This is pretty fuckin' terrible if you ask me, though I'm also pretty certain that if it was a Massachusetts Democrat proposing it instead of a Florida Republican, progressives would be calling it "a commonsense disclosure law pushing back against Citizens United". It's very clearly intended to chill expression and stifle criticism. This is broad enough that even running ads on your blog criticizing the legislature or executive would be subject to reporting. It's not remotely content-neutral. It's plainly unconstitutional thuggery.

Then why do you think it is about tax collection purposes?

The bill itself does not mention anything about tax collection, and it does not seek to get information about any posts that are made by bloggers from which they might derive income that do not relate to the posts about non-government subjects.

Because you’re a paid blogger. They want you to disclose your income. You can’t later when it’s tax time say you made a contribution to someone’s campaign or something.

Half a dozen times trying to clean up the legislature's website's terrible formatting for post #33.

That doesn't answer my question. Presumably, the paid bloggers are disclosing their overall income at tax time. So why would this bill be needed to try to help keep track of the bloggers' income? Why would it matter for tax collection purposes if the income is from blogging about DeSantis or blogging about pets or some other random subject? Why are there such harsh penalties for failure to report?

Why is there nothing in the bill that connects the duty to report to declaration on taxes or failure to file proper tax returns?

The obvious answer is that the author wants to create a system where they can track a) what is being said about the government b) punish anyone who says something negative about the government and mistakenly does not jump through the hoops that it sets up and it has nothing to do with collecting the fair share of taxes.

Did someone pay you to write that? If so you should probably register with the government as a lobbyist.

There is no punishment for what’s being said in the blog. The only punishment is failure to report who’s paying you to write the blog. Again, they want to treat bloggers like lobbyists. As much as I’d love to see all of self proclaimed “independent journalists” on Twitter get taxed or fined out of existence, I think this is going to backfire.

You realize that this applies to every elected official and not just Ron DeSantis? Do you also realize that he hasn’t even said if he supports this bill or not?

actually, I'm responding to your apparently reading only a headline from a sensationalist-I'm gonna guess, youtuber? )

although I guess I erred in that you're trying to dance around the facts O2C parsed rather than send others looking for a specific needle in a haystack of needles.

Nope. If it was just about tax collecting it wouldn't be targeted only at people that write about politicians.

It isn’t just about tax collection. That is just one aspect of it. Just to be clear, someone could write something positive about Ron DeSantis and still get fined for not disclosing who paid them to write the blog.

You're right, it's not just about tax collection, it's about helping DeSantis build an enemies list and targeting them.:async:

    :sigh:

This could be such an easy win for you, buddy. Meatball Ron is weaponizing the state tax department to intimidate anyone that might criticize him. You could just admit it's shady and be on the winning side of an argument for a change.

Nope, there is no nexus to the Florida tax system. It's each house of the legislature and the Commission on Ethics (ha) that administers the fines. There is nothing in the proposed legislation about taxes at all.

I am on the winning side. I get get it, you don't want someone like George Soros for example, getting exposed for funding some radical blogger who writes a hit piece during campaign season because then voters would be more informed as to where this is coming from and they may vote the "wrong" way.

George Soros and the bloggers already have to file 1099-MISCs for things like this. This is entirely about creating a potential enemies list.
