Hello sir or madam, I am a gamer, and tut tut, it would appear I am more knowledgeable than you about matters electronic. Your foolish notion that something that is designed to look like audio/video equipment, which is frequently tucked away in small nooks and on shallow shelves, should not require ventilation demonstrates your foolish 1990s thinking. Well, sir or madam, we are in the 21st century, and henceforth, all gaming consoles should have a maximum of six inches of clearance from all vents, so that you may enjoy all the finest in glorified technical demonstrations from your Sony Playstation 3 and the dulcet crimson glow of the Microsoft Xbox 360's red ring of passing. Furthermore, should you elect to store your computer in a hutch or other cabinet as is frequently favored by the proletariat, only folly will result. Computers are meant to be proudly displayed to demonstrate your fine social breeding and obvious monetary worth.
Or, to put it another way, take the stick out of your ass. "Your complaint is rendered invalid by your own ignorance."? It's a fucking video game console, not the goddamn Declaration of Independence or something.
Umm...don't you mean a MINIMUM of 6 inches? And that is a little too low, IMO. I have a computer with more than 6 inches of room from the vents, and it still acts strangely if I use it too long or if it's a hot day.
Make sure you put your PS3 on the carpet - that way it will have good airflow underneath, and really, really flow well - guaranteeing it will stay cool. It's also good to stick your laptops on pillows, blankets, and mattresses.
No, it's not. My complaint is less about ignorance and more about expectations. I get what you have to/should do do RE: ventilation (for the record, our computers are properly ventilated), I just think it's bullshit that a gaming console has such requirements. (See previous post about XBox). Even ventilated, the PS3 gets more hot than our computers, and we have it on for for three hours at a time maximum (we only use it to watch movies). I refuse to believe that the PS3 is just THAT special that it needs to generate that much heat. The Wii does just fine inside of our entertainment center and it doesn't get hot.
ALL OF OUR COMPUTERS ARE VENTILATED EXCEPT FOR THE ONE COMPUTER I HAVE THAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS A COMPUTER.
Come on Wahine... that's not a fair argument, considering the capabilities of the PS3 compared to the Wii. Between my son, my cousin, thier friends and I, my PS3 get's at least 6 hours of play each day... sometimes more... and that's something I worried about... but I have one of those HDTV entertainment centers and I have the PS3 in one open compartment by itself. It has about 6-8 inches clearance on all sides and it never had a problem. Still thinking of buying an extra cooling fan... Either way, the point is academic. The PCMag review I posted states the PS3 slim is more efficient and produces less heat.
PS3 sales have grown 104% in the first week of the PS3 Slim availability. So hey, I guess there are people out there who actually do want damn thing if it has a reasonable price.
It'll be interesting to watch game sales to see how much of that increase was current PS3 owners upgrading to the Slim.
The small increase over the same week last year's numbers make me think that the big jump was almost completely due to people who were going to purchase a PS3 anyway but waited to buy one until the price dropped.
Well, duh But it should also be noted that the slim wasn't available nationwide yet and it still posted those big gains. 360 also lowered the price of the "elite" and they experienced around a ~30% jump in sales. Wii slipped about 4%. So, last week, all 3 consoles sold a shockingly similar amount of units as each other. With the "full featured" 360 and the PS3 both at $299, I think Nintendo might soon consider dropping the price of the Wii.
