There was another press release.
Looks like they are physically moving to another building/campus/whatever, something they were planning to do anyway but did now because of the hack.

Some services will start to come up this week.
Looks like they will start turning on the network one region at a time.

I hope Alpha hasn't sent Tron back yet.

Are you starting to feel bad for Sony yet? No? Maybe this will change your mind. Sony Online Entertainment has, apparently, been the victim of another breach that has, according to Nikkei.com, resulted in the release of 12,700 credit card numbers -- and presumably some other information as well. 4,300 of those credit card numbers are said to be Japanese, but no saying how many are American. Thankfully, data is said to be from 2007, minimizing the number of still-valid credit cards exposed making us wonder if perhaps this wasn't some sort of backup that was exposed.

Word has it that Sony knew of the vulnerability which allowed the first hack to succeed for some time prior to the attack. One would think that they'd have learned their lesson from that and swiftly made changes to all their systems.

What would make "one" think that they'd be competent and able to make changes to all their systems this quickly?

If anything companies lock up in situations like this since everyone is panicking and "escalating", and management is dreaming up new initiatives to convince everyone that they will stop this sort of thing from happening again.

It's only been a bit more than a week.

Ok. So this second attack doesn't affect playstation users.
This attack hacked Sony's other online services.
Computer gamers who play EverQuest, EverQuest II, The Matrix Online, PlanetSide, Star Wars Galaxies, Free Realms, and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, DC Universe Online are affected.

You know, people who actually DO use their credit card online.

According to an article I read on IGN this morning, it was the same attack. They are just now realizing how deep they were penetrated.

This is disturbing. Maybe it's time to admit that the free model of online gaming services isn't optimal and pay someone to actually watch this fucker and develop protocols for these situations. I wouldn't mind a $50-$60 a year fee for PSN if it means faster downloads and better security.

The only person responsible for this are the hackers themselves. Sony need to dedicate more resources to the PSN and I don't know if that's possible if they keep giving it away for free.

I would... Shit, I already do. Even if they have one new guy looking out for the 77 million accounts and 10 million credit cards they store, it doesn't make me feel much better. They need an entire department with policies, procedures and protocols in place. Finding out that your data "might have been compromised" two weeks after an attack is simply unacceptable.

Today, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing in Washington, DC on “The Threat of Data Theft to American Consumers.”

Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sony Computer Entertainment America, submitted written answers to questions posed by the subcommittee about the large-scale, criminal cyber-attack we have experienced. We wanted to share those answers with you (click here).

In summary, we told the subcommittee that in dealing with this cyber attack we followed four key principles:

1. Act with care and caution.
2. Provide relevant information to the public when it has been verified.
3. Take responsibility for our obligations to our customers.
4. Work with law enforcement authorities.

We also informed the subcommittee of the following:

* Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.

* We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”

* By April 25, forensic teams were able to confirm the scope of the personal data they believed had been taken, and could not rule out whether credit card information had been accessed. On April 26, we notified customers of those facts.

* As of today, the major credit card companies have not reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are the direct result of this cyber attack.

* Protecting individuals’ personal data is the highestpriority and ensuring that the Internet can be made secure for commerce is also essential. Worldwide, countries and businesses will have to come together to ensure the safety of commerce over the Internet and find ways to combat cybercrime and cyber terrorism.

* We are taking a number of steps to prevent future breaches, including enhanced levels of data protection and encryption; enhanced ability to detect software intrusions, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns; additional firewalls; establishment of a new data center in an undisclosed location with increased security; and the naming of a new Chief Information Security Officer.

We told the subcommittee about our intent to offer complimentary identity theft protection to U.S. account holders and detailed the “Welcome Back” program that includes free downloads, 30 days of free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium subscription service; 30 days of free service for Music Unlimited subscribers; and extending PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited subscriptions for the number of days services were unavailable.

We are working around the clock to have some PlayStation Network services restored and we’ll be providing specific details shortly. We hope this update is helpful to you, and we will continue to keep you posted as we work to restore our network and provide you with both the entertainment and the security you deserve.

Free Stuff!

You know I wonder if Sony is just floating this possible credit-card-theft stuff out there so their case will seem more criminally prosecutable? The credit card tables were encrypted and Anon attackers probably didn't hack in to steal credit cards.

I guess a credit card thief could be trying to pin their attack on Anon in an attempt to misdirect the investigation. Or perhaps a couple of those Anon hackers just got greedy and thought "oh well, while I'm here might as well make some cash."

Sony doesn't need to float the credit card stuff to make this a criminal offense. Simply hacking their system is enough and any prosecutor worth his salt could slap on a few dozen terrorism charges to boot.

Sony already has a class action lawsuit against it in the United States, and now there is one in Canada too. The one in Canada comes with a price tag, which is nice, of a $1 billion dollars, but in Canadian money, which is somewhere around what American dollars are worth (I am too lazy to look up actual exchange rates, but Canadian dollars are not Monopoly money).

This is probably not the last of these lawsuits. I imagine that a bunch of people are kind of pissed, and want money in exchange for having service go down and their information being leaked.

21-year-old Natasha Maksimovic of Mississauga, Ontario filed the lawsuit, and released a rather provocative statement:

"If you can't trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust? It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users."

Clearly she is an agent of Anonymous. If Sony is smart, they'll counter-sue the PlayStation 3 users of Canada for $2 billion Canadian dollars.

Sony settled out of court with George Hotz (GeoHot), but once you've stuck your penis into a hornets' nest, the hornets are stay pissed until either many of the hornets are dead, or you're writhing in agony, and no longer a threat. Anonymous has promised "the biggest attack" on Sony in the history of the corporation.

Anonymous has likely been behind the recent "maintenance" outages that Sony websites have been experiencing, but they remain unsatisfied. It's similar to how the attacks on Scientology through the internet were not enough and protests ensued.

Now Anonymous is proposing (and will likely execute) a boycott of Sony products, and protests outside of Sony stores, organized through the weapons of terrorists everywhere, IRC and Facebook.

Allow me to slip out of my video game journalist's assless chaps, and into my sociologist's take-me-seriously button down. It is on the agenda of at least one political party to de-unionize at least part of this country, but while this is happening, the ability to rise up in protest has simply grown easier due to technological facilitation. Anonymous and the current protests in the Middle East are a symptom of this. I'm glad that there is this watchdog hornets' nest, and I'm really glad people keep sticking their dick into it. Anonymous is legion. It does not forgive, it does not forget.

I wonder if Anon will be listed as a terrorist group. Little Johnny Smith's mom sure is going be surprised when the Feds break in and ship her 13 year old son off to Gitmo.

Can you ship PSN cards to Gitmo? or well I guess Sony will ban his username too. Maybe PS Home has an online Gitmo to send his avatar to. It's probably behind the apartment building in Central Plaza.
