The same is true for small businesses. You may be the best of the two of us and deserving of the one promotion, but if I can convince the owner/operator that I'm a better person for the job, then I get the job and all your hard work is for naught.

"hard work" is a bullshit term used by politicians to convince the populace that low wage earners are not deserving of higher pay.

And how’s that worked out for ya? All that hard work surely has you in upper management at this point yes?

Or because managers/operators/etc. often promote the less deserving candidate because they'd rather work with them than you. Or because they're a better fit for the 'culture.' Or because you rock in your position and they don't want to lose you as a workhorse. Or because they don't like your haircut. Or because their definition of hard work is a lot different than yours.

If they can’t see that I’m the one deserving of the promotion, then at some point you got to say fuck em’ and move on to somewhere else where your hard work is appreciated. I’m sorry, but people need to know their worth and not tolerate bullshit.

Several things wrong with this - and trust me, as someone who has felt the same way - A) convincing another company of your worth is often harder than convincing your present company. B) with health insurance and retirement and other such issues tied to employment, many people can't afford to choose another job.

Again, nothing to do with hard work, rather which path one has available.

It’s working out for me just fine so far. I’m getting paid the most I ever have and I have good benefits and I’m on the right track towards management, but that’s not the be all, end all to my game plan.

I take plenty of pride in my work, thank you.

I've also worked for organizations that paid good wages and treated their employees well and organizations that didn't, and I can tell you it's a damn sight easier to bring everything you have to the job when "how will I pay my bills this month" isn't nagging at you all the time.

So you are telling me that you are not the person who was the Alternative Delegate from [state] Congressional District 01 to the 2012 Republican National Convention?

So I can post the personal info about said Alternative Delegate from that state’s Republican Party website in this thread because that isn’t you?

    But, it's not "hard work".

Are you understanding what I'm trying to convey here? Yes, there are many avenues to success. But, "hard work" isn't one.

No need to apologize. But, you are wrong. I've just demonstrated.

However, as you so forcefully disagree, please show examples of when hard work does actually lead to promotion - in general. Not specifics.

Also, kissing your bosses' asses and being a tryhard does not constitute hard work...which is a concept many managers just can't (or won't) comprehend.

For me, the best encapsulation of how hard work isn't the magic elixir to success is a cartoon--Bob's Burgers. No show on television better shows the inherent unfairness of life under capitalism. No matter how hard you try, the Jimmy Pestos of the world are always going to have a line at their door...and you won't.

I don't live there anymore and haven't lived there since 2013 so I really don't care. I do get emails from the MD Democratic Party all of the time though.

A Democrat would always pitch hard work, but also that hard work demands fair pay.

A Republican will give you tax cuts even if you force your employees to work 15 hour shifts with a 20 minute pee break for $8 an hour, because you spend a fraction of what you save in wages on giving them a nice weekend on a yacht.

You demonstrated from your perspective. I have my perspective and I say hard work does lead to promotions. But if you think hard work doesn't lead to much, why don't you tell that to all of those musicians, who lived in their van, played show after show, night after night and worked some shit job until they finally made it. Or maybe those single moms who worked two jobs while raising kids and went to night school to get a college degree so they could get a job and better themselves and help their kids.

This is exactly what I'm saying.

Doesn't matter how many nights you spend in a van or do show after show, if your music sucks, you ain't going anywhere.

Also, working two jobs is hard work, but learning a skill is often not hard work.

I've gone to school. I've worked minimum wage paying jobs. I've worked my way up.... half-way up the corporate ladder.

But, if you say "hard work", I'm thinking of the minimum wage paying job as a maintenance worker at a state park. Working the fry station in fast food. Waking up at 5 am to do PT, clean the barracks from top to bottom, marching an hour for field training, spending all day in the field, then marching back just in time to pull fire guard or show up for Battalion guard duty.

Honestly, I do not think most people know what "hard work" is.

But, do not pretend sitting on your ass learning to work in an office on a computer is hard work.

That is the issue. Republicans want to use the term "hard work" when it doesn't apply.

Counterpoint: all the musicians from, say, my home state who were actually very good, worked hard, played from lobster festivals to civic centers--and never made it. Or all those single moms who worked two jobs while raising kids who went to school to get a better job...and lost out to some moronic 22 year old fresh out of the university who was prettier or had more charisma. Hard work can help put you in position, but the true measures of success are always going to be luck, personality, and station in life. Are most CEOs formerly floor workers? No. Are most presidents formerly blue collar workers? Of course not. Life ain't fair.
