you don't think I have the attention and memory of a housefly? Far be it from me to argue, but I think fellow wordforge members would back me up on this.
duly noted! That said being a conservative (evil and ignorant by nature) is icing on the cake on not measuring up to liberal standards.
I don't consider you a conservative. Conservatives have a recognizable ideology and substantive political opinions. I may not agree with all of them, but even so. You, however, I consider a Republican. That in and of itself isn't wrong, but in your case it lacks anything resembling substance. It's a tribal identity with you, and is completely reactionary and devoid of critical thought. There are many Republicans like you. There are many Democrats like you. Partisan. Low-information. Whatever. You keep on being you.
You do know the US does not have a National language right? And you do know why the founding fathers refused to establish a National language right? So, to assume one language should be prevalent over others is bigoted.
The part you're missing is that he wants there to be a national language... his, of course. He'd have a cow if he saw the ballots (or even the utility bills) in California...
Is it too much to ask that if you’re going to become a citizen here that you speak English, the predominantly spoken language?
Let us know when you can speak and read a second language. Or at least improve your English as a First Language.
My (white, northern European) ancestors didn't. Why should it suddenly become a requirement now that the majority of immigrants have darker skin?
You've been asked why several times and you refuse to answer. You're getting as evasive as oldfella. It's not a good look.
Because one way to tie a large nation together is to have everyone speaking the same language. You can still support other languages, but if you establish that the "official" language of business and government is X, then that gives everyone at least one thing in common.
exactly! Speak whatever you want to at home or in any other non-official capacity, but learn the official language, and don't expect full accommodation if you don't. I think that's a reasonable request from the country in which you are choosing to relocate.
What if, in the near future, more people speak Spanish than English in the US? Do you think any vocal minorities might have a huge issue with that?
If that winds up being the case, then you recognize that it's happened and declare the official language to now be Spanish. Remember, the language of international diplomacy has changed a few times. Everybody needed to speak French only a couple centuries ago.
That's fair, but I think it goes without saying that any attempts to change a hypothetical US official language from English to Spanish would go...badly.
not necessarily. Other countries have changed official languages in the recent past, so our switch wouldn't be setting any precedent. True every country is unique so you never know. That said if we can't decide on daylight saving time that might be a bad sign.
