Never had a problem growing them down here in South Florida. Just need sun shade and regular watering. Biggest problem I've got is squirrels and rats. I've got to put up some chicken wire some how to stop them.
I've been into prepping since about 2009, hmmm I wonder what else happened about then???? I can't garden where I live, unless I just make some little planters in buckets, but I do stock up on canned goods when they are on sale. And I rotate through them so they don't expire. Plus I take 2 liter drink bottles and rinse them out and store water in them. Good for drinking, flushing the toilet or just brushing your teeth if the water is out. And using coupons when cleaning supplies and toiletries are sale, I've been able to stock up on some things that way. That really helped while I was unemployed, because there were some things that I didn't have to buy for a while. I just need to get some more ammo to help protect my stash o stuff!!!!
Ooh, I just remembed. I'm also planning on setting up a bee hive. Both for honey, and to pollinate my garden.
Something to consider about rain barrels. Even if you use food grade barrels (and I suggest you do), if you are considering using them as a way to get potable water in the event your municipal or well based supply is interrupted, you need to put a filtration system in to weed out bacteria, leeched chemicals, etc before you drink it.
In an emergency, you can add 8 drops of plain old liquid bleach per gallon of water, mix it up, and let it set for half an hour....although that only deals with bacteria.
Don't disagree it's good to have those. I would still put in the inline passive filtering system any ways. One thing I learned running around the woods ages ago is to always have some sort of kool-aid or gatorade to mix into the water to make it more palatable.
Heh. When we did the war, we operated reverse-osmosis water purification units. Regulations required that we put chemicals in the water after we processed it but since we were right there we got to "drink from the hose". It was yummy.
