No one was talking to you or about you until you decided to come into this thread telling people to fuck off. Take your meds.
For anyone that didn't read the article, she's the new Miss Japan, and she's ethnically Ukranian and was born in Ukraine, but culturally Japanese as she was raised there. Apparently it's led to some discussion about what it means to be Japanese. Is it something you can prove or disprove with a DNA test, or is it more about culture and attitude?
So, this seems like a complicated thing. On the one hand, there is prejudice in Japan against people not of ethnic Japanese ancestry. Not in an American "yew better git out of this town by sundown, boy" kind of way, but in the way that causes my Minnesota-born, Norwegian-ancestry cousin living in Japan to comment that she's basically a second-class citizen. So from that standpoint, some good can probably be done by a person of foreign ancestry winning the Miss Japan contest. On the other hand, Japan has been as bombarded as anywhere else by the western media-driven image of what constitutes female beauty, so there is also a implicit message to ethnically Japanese girls of "see, this western woman with Slavic features is beautiful and you are not."
I think @Jenee's point is that responding to a picture of a thin woman with "she needs to eat a sandwich" isn't that different from responding to a picture of a larger woman with "she needs to lay off the cheeseburgers."
Yeah, some people in the article said that she's more passionate about Japanese culture and representing Japan on the world stage than plenty of native born Japanese people, and that's why she deserved the title. I dunno, that feels like a stretch. Firstly because the Japanese aren't exactly a group with low self esteem, but mostly because everyone knows that beauty pageants aren't proper "who's the most beautiful woman in the area" competitions, despite my thread title. Ask any American who the most beautiful woman in America is, they're far more likely to say Kim Kardashian or Kylie Jenner or Margot Robbie or Zoe Kravitz or Ana de Armas or some Marvel actress or one of Taylor Swift's buddies than they are to say Madison Marsh, the current Miss America.
you weren't around? although I go through at least one pack of these per week, handing them out to clients at the shelter, along with a couple packs of Rez smokes. If you're ever in the Toronto shelter system I'll likely hook you up
There's a lot of ethnostates left in the world, as most states started that way, or if they aren't it's because they conquered another nearby people and incorporated them. Is it OK for Japanese people to want their culture to remain Japanese? IMO sure, as long as anyone that they allow to live there that isn't Japanese is also welcome into that culture.
I thought occidentals couldn't become Japanese citizens. But, I last heard that in the 90's, so maybe things are changing?
Seems like it's a thing now. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap...ge of,occupation or existing financial assets. Need help packing?
Seen elsewhere: The fact that none of the other contestants have committed seppuku is proof that none of them deserve the title Miss Japan.
Not any more. Ukrainian-born Miss Japan gives up her title after an article about her affair with a married man
I may be wrong but wouldn't it be particularly japanese to give up a title like that due to the rather tiny dishonor of dating a married man? All I am saying is someone needs to do a wellness check on her and keep her away from any daggers or swords she can impale herself with. This is the racheal dolezal of japanese women, and she might do something stupid.
