Well, no, clearly a hypothetical. Would you take offense to a private business building a religious symbol on the moon or in space? Could be anything from any religion.
I would find it sad if any false religion made it into space. Only Christianity should be spread to the cosmos.
That shit you just wrote almost makes me want to make a new virus that wipes out humanity by turning the dead into Zombies.
This is probably inspired by the private moon mission thread, but there was in fact an effort several years ago to use the Moon's surface for advertising. Pizza Hut was going to project from Earth an image of the company logo on to the Moon for three days at one point. There was much public outcry against it, and they decided not to do it. Personally, I think it would have been kind of cool, but also kind of crass.
I say it would kick off a space race because you just know atheists would build a rocket to go to the moon to knock it down. Hell we could colonize the galaxy that way. Religious group puts up cross. Atheists show up to knock it down. Chase each other across the galaxy.
Yeah, let 'em go ahead. Then, some atheist scientists can laser project some graffiti up there, and have any number of interesting things ending with "t".
Uh yes. Christianity builds cross, Muslims come and burn it down, Jews go into space and wipe out their moon mosque, Xtians decide they don't want the New Temple in Mare Imbrium and go burn it down, which triggers the Muslims to... Yep, we could spread out by doing what we do best
If it gets the nutcases off Earth and takes their religious wars with them, I say let them have at it.
In Tom Baker era Dr. Who, it's the reverse, the whitebreads all went out into space, and Earth is a Muslim superpower.
Space Crusades. That'd make for interesting science fiction. Or maybe it already has; does anyone know whether it's been done recently?
It'd depend on the context to be honest. It is unfortunate that religions tend to be some of the longer lasting human projects, so much so that they may be a necessary motivator behind any kind of long-term or generational space mission.
Is that what the storyline is with that? Huh. To be honest, I've never gotten into Halo, so I had no idea what its storyline is. Pretty good twist on the whole "kill aliens" theme.
One thing that seems to have slipped by re: putting religious symbols in space... the Muslims have a head start.
So maybe by putting a big-ass cross on the Moon, they'll corrupt the symbol of Islam?!? Let's send all the Christian fundies and Muslim fundies up to the Moon to fight it out!* * - with a VERY limited oxygen supply!!!!!
Ah but do the Muslims really have a head start? Dave Scott of Apollo 15 left a bible on the control panel of the lunar rover. 2390 x 2395 pixels There is a relatively flat, small cubioidal grey and red object on the control panel. It juts out over the side a little. It is a King James Bible placed there by Apollo 15 Commander David Scott. Then there was Buzz Aldrin who took communion on the moon, complete with wafer and wine. And then of course there was the famous Apollo 8 Lunar Orbit Christmas reading. Americans have already slapped Christianity all over the moon. Seems like the Muslims have a bit of catching up to do.
Some posters definitely are more difficult to refrain from flaming than others, I do have to say that.
OTOH an alien race with superior weponry could impose theirs on us. Which is letting the geanie out of the bottle. Next thing you know LEO would be filled with advertising. It's bad enough there's junk in orbit.
The first man in space was an athiest, and mocked the concept of a deity while up there. Athiests 1 Christians 0
Well on the plus side, since the NASA mission is now to "make Muslims feel good about themselves" if a private corporation put a cross on the Moon, maybe we'd have to revive the space program.
Personally, I don't believe that the type of religious nut who would want to carry out something like this would have the scientific knowledge to do so.
