If I may be so bold as to ask, quote #1019 pisses me off and I'd like to see it deleted.

It was a bullshit attribution when it was submitted and it's even more so now. I have never remotely alluded to Levitical law, and when I did comment on gay marriage I expressly and specifically said I did NOT want religion to be an issue in the matter...I have, in fact, repeatedly gone on record advocation the disassociation of marriage and government altogether.

It may seem small to you but it's BS like this that forms a first impression of the posters here for newbies. I was never THAT guy - and i almost left because of THAT stereotype....and god knows I'm hell and gone from that guy now.

So yeah....I'm kinda ranting at this point...

Anyway, could I get it removed?...not the quote, just the attribution which says it's in response to me.

(now that I think of it, my head would probably explode to know just how many such remarks about me appear in the quotes)

For those of us who disabled the quote thing long, long ago, would you mind posting the quote here?

Edit: also, it probably would have been better to do this in private. I can see the potential for people to use this to get at you in the future.

I can see exactly where Shep is coming from here.

The problem that I see, however, is that there are several bullshit attributions in the quotes. While I can't currently recall one that misrepresents any of my own posts, I have often seen some that misrepresent (other than comically) the views and posts of others -- which should be clear to a longtime poster, but not the newbie Shep mentioned.

I've seen this as one of the free speech prices we pay here. Of course misquoting other people goes beyond free speech definitions in RL. But WF usually errs on the side of too much rather than too little freedom. If we started to approve or disapprove quotes, that might open up more trouble than it's worth.

Hahaha, oh God it's a quote by me? I'm not the one who submitted the quote, but in context with your quote it works.

You said you weren't advocating Livitical law, but I claimed that I was (as a joke, of course).

But yeah, either remove Shep's name, or clarify that in the parentheses what was going on in the context of the situation. Something like "In response to Shep, who wasn't advocating Livitical law."

Yeah, it's just the attribution comment that gets me....I agree that you set a bad precedent if you start censoring the quotes themselves.

I would prefer that we do away with the quotes all-together. I have them disabled when I view the board. :clyde:

There are far too many quotes, and far too many long winded ones.

Perhaps, if possible, in a gesture of compromise to those who will most assuredly want quotes to be kept we could fold the lot of them into The Archive in a new thread, or the Wordforge Quotes thread already in progress.

Just so I'm clear, are you suggesting saving the existing quotes then doing away with the quote feature altogether?

That would be fine with me.

    Yessir.

That way people who like quotes can continue to do them in a thread in the archive, while not affecting the other users.

^How is that trolling? You said that you didn't know of anyone who uses the quotes feature, but as Faceman pointed out (as evidenced by this fucking thread!), Shep uses it, and he might enjoy the feature.

I have quotes on and don't really care either way.

edit: Although I think the laughter in seeing how often Storms "$35 for a barrel of oil" quote comes up alone is worth keeping the system. :)

I aslo keep it on. Sometimes it's worth a chuckle. Doing away with it just because it's used for trolling seems ... un-WF to me.

Either way, it's not a big deal.

Actually, I never arsed myself to find out it could be turned off. I kind of assume if I didn't know it most newbies wouldn't either.

Maybe the solution is to have "quotes off" as the default mode and a poster would have to trouble himself to turn them on if s/he really wanted them?

    I do.

That said, the quote function as is SUCKS. I see so many funny quotes, and I can't add to the thing without going to the front page of the site and submitting the thing in manually, and a bunch of bullshit, so I've stopped using it.

Folding it into the Green Room thread seems like a good idea.

My only complaint about the quotes is that I haven't been able to add to them since my first batch back when I joined.

Many times since then, I have gone to "add a quote" only to have my quote never, ever show up.

    Ever.

(I'd assume it was disabled, but other people's quotes show up, so...)

The Quotes function suffers from two problems: Nobody cares enough to vet and approve the quotes, and we've lost the hack that let people submit them quickly.

But that's a problem with vBulletin in general. Most of these minor features require administrator access to use, and that's just not handed out for such.
