Delete all the current quotes. Add a feature that allows people to tag a post (not their own!) as a quote candidate. If enough people tag it, add it to the list!

I gotta disagree with the first part. A lot of those older quotes come from posts that have long since been pruned, but are worth keeping around.

That said, the tag feature is :techman:

They need someone to go through and make a list of all the quotes that need or could be pruned, and the ones that could use some cleaning/editing...

Point of order: I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't possible to "edit" any quotes, except in the sense of "deleting and re-submitting".

Not true, they can be edited.

There are over 1400 of them though, and I think the idea of sorting through them is a bit daunting.

When huge ones come up randomly, I delete them and if someone gives me a quote number of a problem I take care of it.

So people, if you see a problem...tell me and include the quote number, please.

A criteria for what should be kept over what shouldn't- I've been here for over a year, but I still missed a lot before that and there may be quotes dear to some that just look like a bunch of rubbish to me. A fail-safe criteria could be rating, starting with deleting everything below a rating of 2. Thus it could be suggested to anyone who cares to actually vote on the quotes that they like and give low scores on the ones they don't like, thus ensuring a much broader vote on some quotes to better determine the need to keep them.

Other examples: The Tick quotes, while largely funny, aren't incredibly necessary. The people who do like them are a part of The Tick's limited fanbase, and most likely already know them by heart. Therefore, while they can be amusing to some it is lost on others and really doesn't do much for the database. NOTE: I'm not trying to slander or belittle The Tick, as I myself am a fan.

The only thing I have to say about the quotes is this: doesn't it make more sense to keep the ones having to directly with the members and posters of WF? Get rid of all the extras from Mark Twain, MLK, The Tick, Seinfeld, Friends, and whatever else. I'd rather see a quote from an old thread/conversation than a quote from someone or something that doesn't directly pertain to WF.

Well first off I get rid of any duplicate quotes, then I focus on lengthy famous quotes, stupid famous quotes, lengthy member quotes and finally stupid member quotes.

So basically you have to decide which quotes are too long or too stupid to keep.

The WF quotes are more important to keep than the famous quotes because you can find the famous quotes anywhere.

I like the quotes, and I echo what people have said about getting rid of any quotes not directly related to WF.

The rating system could be actually used. I don't know how many people do.
