Having one's work on transgender history and gender diverse cultures erased in a time of genocide

In the America of Project 2025, there’s an ominous force erasing all mention of LGBTQIA+ people from government websites and even monuments, quickly. This force, Our Nothing, steadily moves through the United States and everything it touches turns to nothing.

Today, I woke up, and while having my coffee, and discovered that, yes, as I had been expecting, the PBS Map of Gender Diverse Cultures, a map and page I re-authored in 2023, removing a lot of low-quality information, updating the language, and vetting the information that remains, was gone, “extinct” in the parlance of PBS’ cheeky 404 error page.

A few days ago, a friend in Denver messaged me on Instagram. This was our exchange:

Since this conversation, I have been periodically checking the page, presuming it would be scrubbed, but not thinking too much about it. I have other things to do besides wait for the axe to fall. There is so much to be done, now.

There’s a full backup of my work - I’ll publish it in full, here, shortly, no doubt.

The PBS Map of Gender Diverse Cultures is gone.

Our Nothing has taken a piece of me, a piece of my voice. It is a small piece, but an important one. So…this is what censorship feels like in the body. I won’t feign shock.

As an Indigenous 3rd gender transfemme, I want non-colonial models of gender diversity and Indigenous voices to be present and well-represented in every conversation about transgender culture, transgender rights, and gender diversity. This erasure touches me in deep places, as an Indigenous person in a country built on the genocide of Indigenous people, as a Jew who has run their fingers over the rough tattoos of Holocaust survivors, and as a transgender person in 2025, living through the attempted genocide of my kin.

The erasure of this information cannot shock someone like me, and it should not shock you, either.

This work was critical, because for whatever reasons, this page was the primary page being referenced globally on gender diversity, and, before I cleaned it up, it was a poor resource. I did the job for peanuts, because it needed to be done. A resource routinely quickly used by organizations, educators, and students due to its high rank in search engine results became a better resource. This work led to other work - opportunities to bring one more Indigenous transgender voice to the table.

That work has become passion-work. I will not be deterred from that work

We will not be deterred from our work. We will not be silenced.

The map will return in some form, our stories will still be told, and we will not be rendered “extinct.”

Our Nothing has come. It is here and it is destroying everything it touches.

It is now up to us to defend our culture, our history, and our kin with our lives.

No More Compliance: Historic LGBT Clinic Whitman-Walker's Erasing Of Trans People A Step Too Far
On Friday night, it became widely known that several links to gender affirming care and transgender resources disappeared from Whitman-Walker's website. Their stated reason is harmful to us all.

The clinic, a pillar of D.C.’s LGBTQ+ community, was named after poet Walt Whitman and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker—figures historically tied to queer and gender-nonconforming advocacy. Yet now, in a stark departure from its namesake’s legacy, Whitman-Walker has quietly removed “gender-affirming care” from its list of services on the homepage and obscured key resources for transgender people. Reports indicate that this move stems from fears of losing federal funding under the Trump administration’s aggressive anti-trans policies. But this kind of preemptive capitulation isn’t just shortsighted—it emboldens authoritarians, sets a dangerous precedent, and paves the way for even more crackdowns on transgender rights.

The erasure of transgender people from the clinic’s website is extensive. On January 23, “gender-affirming care” was listed prominently among its service offerings on the front page. By February 21, that listing had disappeared. Several pages are now either password-protected or removed entirely. Their dedicated Gender Affirming Care page, once a comprehensive resource with guides and information about transgender healthcare, now redirects users back to the website’s homepage—its contents wiped from public view.

The decision likely stems from Trump’s executive orders threatening funding for organizations that support transgender people. These guidelines have already convinced a handful of hospitals to halt transgender care and have prompted nonprofits like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network as uncovered by Journalist Mady Castigan to erase transgender resources from their websites in a misguided attempt to comply. The chilling effect of these orders has even spurred ongoing lawsuits aiming to block what amounts to a totalitarian gag rule—one issued unilaterally by Trump without statutory backing.

And indeed, in a recent interview with WAMU, Whitman-Walker’s Britt Walsh, specialty director of care, confirms that this is what was behind the erasure: “We could not take chances that we would not be able to continue services,” Walsh says. “That our FQHC designation would be taken away, that we wouldn’t make payroll. So we pulled things down from our website,” making it clear that they are still offering transgender healthcare but erasing transgender people from public-facing material.

This is a stunning betrayal of transgender people. While Whitman-Walker may believe that scrubbing its website protects its broader services—such as HIV/AIDS care, reproductive health, dental care, and even its continued provision of transgender healthcare—their compliance with erasure inflicts real harm. It blocks new patients from discovering and accessing critical resources, but worse, it legitimizes the White House’s pressure campaign against LGBTQ+ institutions. By yielding to these demands, the clinic sends a chilling message: that transgender people and our healthcare must be hidden, treated as something shameful, unmentionable. That even acknowledging our existence is a risk they are unwilling to take.

Timmothy Snyder’s On Tyranny, a book which has been often quoted in recent times as a guidebook for how to deal with the kind of tyrannical government we are seeing under Trump’s second term, has a lesson for Whitman-Walker, other organizations, and all of us. “Do Not Obey In Advance: Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do… Anticipatory obedience is a political tragedy.”

And indeed, Whitman-Walker is teaching a tyrannical Trump government exactly what it can do. If the administration were to issue an executive order barring federally funded clinics from providing gender-affirming care to new patients—or even banning care for transgender adults entirely—it’s easy to imagine Whitman-Walker making the same argument: that they must comply to preserve their FQHC designation and continue serving the broader LGBTQ+ community. This is the same logic now being used by shelters and children’s hospitals, justifying their silence on trans rights to protect their operations, and it echoes the Human Rights Campaign’s 2007 decision to sideline transgender people in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to prioritize protections for cisgender LGB people—a failed compromise that history does not look kindly upon and that the organization has had to work hard to recover from.

It’s unlikely that Whitman-Walker’s attempt to shield itself will even protect its funding. In D.C., it’s no secret that the clinic is a major provider of transgender care. They even acknowledged it in a radio show broadcast to the entire region. An administration willing to strip its funding over a few website pages is not going to suddenly change course just because those pages were hidden. Instead, Whitman-Walker now faces the worst of both worlds—complicit in its own erasure while still vulnerable to the very attacks it sought to avoid.

Erasure is the line that cannot be crossed. It is the foundation upon which far worse policies are built, normalizing the idea that transgender people should not be acknowledged, let alone protected. The moment we accept even a little compliance, we set the stage for further marginalization. I have spoken with those making these decisions at medical organizations, shelters, and advocacy groups—many believe they are doing the right thing, that erasure is a necessary trade-off to keep providing care or to serve other populations that are also in need. But as my wife, Representative Zooey Zephyr, tells every new legislator she meets, “One day someone will ask you to do the wrong thing for the right reason. Don’t. It just makes it easier to do the wrong thing.”

Whitman-Walker—and every organization facing this choice—must take that lesson to heart.

Yep. I live within minutes of Indiana. Once in a great while, there will be KKK rallies here. Fortunately, the numbers are always small, but their presence is still here. Occasionally, we'll see flyers pop up around town. I always make sure to deface them in some way. It's funny, though, that people will push back against the KKK, but will openly vote for Trump, his policies, and his bigotries.

The City of Worcester Is the Latest To Defy Trump by Becoming a Transgender Sanctuary City
Massachusetts’ second-largest city votes 9-2 to protect gender-diverse individuals.

“It is your responsibility to stand up and fight for our people, for your people, for the people,” another added.
Nguyen thanked the supporters in attendance.

“I want to really share my gratitude and indebtedness to the community that came out,” they said.

The councilor-at-large had returned after taking a hiatus from their role after they alleged that other council members were creating a “discriminatory and toxic” culture, including be referred to as “it.”
“Under your leadership, I have felt unsafe around this council body,” Nguyen said, according to a report from Spectrum News. “I have faced transphobia with being misgendered and recently learned that I’ve been dehumanized to a point where I am being referred to as ‘it’ by my colleagues on this council.”

The resolution declares that Worcester, the second biggest city in Massachusetts, will not use municipal resources to detain people seeking gender-affirming care, nor will they provide their information to agencies from out of state.

“I don’t care what your beliefs are, but to take the word ‘transgender’ out of the vocabulary in the federal government is just plain wrong,” Mayor Joseph Petty said.
The two councilmembers who voted against the measure said they were concerned that Worcester would lose funding from the Trump administration for going against executive orders.
“There are no new rights that this resolution gives that don’t already exist. However, there’s a potential for federal dollars to be taken away from the City of Worcester,” Councilor-at-Large Morris Bergman said.
The New England city joins numerous cities in America that have recently declared themselves sanctuary cities for transgender individuals, including Ithaca, New York, Kansas City, Missouri, and the Californian cities of West Hollywood, San Francisco, and Sacramento.

Dozens of states have also enacted shield laws that protect access to transgender health care.

Erin in the Morning confirmed that at least three other nonprofits have erased all mentions of transgender people from their websites. Among them, the Boys & Girls Club of America removed pages referencing gender identity or trans issues, leaving only a few tangential mentions—such as a single use of the word “transgender” in a description of the Trevor Project’s services. A comparison of archived and current versions of the site reveals deliberate edits, including the removal of a transgender girl’s story from an article meant to provide relatable youth experiences, which can be seen in an archived version. A separate article for parents of LGBTQ+ youth shows similar redactions, as documented in the Web Archive.

A similar pattern is unfolding at the domestic violence support organization Futures Without Violence, which has removed all LGBTQ+-related resources from its online store, along with several informative PDFs designed to serve the community. While some materials remain, they are no longer linked on the website itself. Mentions of LGBTQ+ individuals have also been scrubbed from the main site, including a page once dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The only acknowledgment of these changes is a vague notice on the homepage stating that the website is “under construction.” Meanwhile, resources that omit any reference to the LGBTQ+ community remain accessible.

The Victim Rights Law Center has likewise erased all mentions of LGBTQ+ individuals from its website. While internal searches still surface some articles, clicking on them leads to dead links, indicating they’ve been removed. Several informative resources have also disappeared from the site. Despite the removal, many other resources remain available, and the organization has provided no explanation for the change.

Erin in the Morning reached out to the Victim Rights Law Center, the Boys & Girls Club of America, and Futures Without Violence via phone and email for comment. None responded before publication.

In response to public pressure, some organizations are reversing their erasure of transgender people. Erin in the Morning reported that Whitman-Walker, a historic LGBTQ+ health clinic in Washington, D.C., had removed mentions of transgender people and gender-affirming care from its website. However, following public outcry and direct outreach, the organization restored some of the deleted pages. Similarly, Mady Castigan reported that the National Sexual Violence Research Center reuploaded webpages mentioning transgender people after backlash sparked by her reporting. These decisions, while harmful, can be undone—proving that when the public pushes back, meaningful change is possible.

The New McCarthyism: LGBTQ+ Purges In Government Begin
After Chris Rufo leaked LGBTQ+ chatlogs from the intelligence community, Gabbard has announced that all those who participated in the chats will be fired.

LGBTQ+ individuals were cast as threats—vulnerable to blackmail, labeled “deviant sex perverts,” and accused of colluding with communist governments. Senator Joseph McCarthy, infamous for the Red Scare, pressured President Eisenhower into signing an executive order purging LGBTQ+ people from government service. With that signature, the campaign escalated rapidly—up to 10,000 federal employees were fired or forced to resign during what became known as the Lavender Scare, a far less taught but even more devastating purge than the Red Scare. The episode remains a lasting stain on U.S. history. And now, it appears we are witnessing its revival: 100 intelligence officials were just fired for participating in an LGBTQ+ support group chat—an internal network not unlike employee resource groups (ERGs) at most companies.

The firings stem from out-of-context chat logs leaked by far-right commentator Chris Rufo on Monday. Sources tell Erin in the Morning that the chat functioned as an ERG-adjacent LGBTQ+ safe space, where participants discussed topics like gender-affirming surgery, hormone therapy, workplace LGBTQ+ policies, and broader queer issues. Rufo, however, framed these conversations as evidence of misconduct, claiming that “NSA, CIA, and DIA employees discuss genital castration” and alleging discussions of “fetishes, kink, and sex.” To Rufo and his audience, merely talking about being transgender and the realities of transition is enough to be labeled “fetish” content.

Eisenhower and McCarthy would have killed for such an easily accessible list of LGBTQ+ federal employees—and the flimsy pretext to purge them.

Within a day of the chat logs’ release, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced that all participants in the “obscene, pornographic, and sexually explicit” chatroom would be terminated. As of today, The New York Times reports that at least 100 members of the ERG-adjacent LGBTQ+ chat have been fired. The Times further notes that Gabbard is being briefed on “other inappropriate activity” elsewhere, signaling the potential for an even broader crackdown on LGBTQ+—and especially transgender—employees in the federal government.

What we have just witnessed is the beginning of an LGBTQ+ purge in government, with a particular focus on transgender employees. Pride ERG chats and LGBTQ+ support groups are commonplace in workplaces across the United States, including within federal agencies. These spaces function not just as forums for discussing policy, lifestyle, and identity, but as de facto lists of LGBTQ+ employees—workers who join to stay informed, find community, and access support. The same mechanism used to justify this mass firing can be weaponized across any branch of government. If merely discussing gender-affirming care is deemed “obscene,” then every LGBTQ+ workplace chat could serve as pretext for an even broader purge.

This was heavily telegraphed in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Project 2025 explicitly aimed to define transgender people as obscene, and now, that agenda is taking shape. If Rufo can convince the public that transgender people merely discussing their medical care or LGBTQ+ people discussing sexual health constitutes obscene, fireable content, it’s easy to see this logic expanding into other areas of government or even into the public sphere. These same arguments have already been used to justify book bans against Gender Queer, drag bans, and broader censorship efforts. Now, Rufo is leveraging the Republican Party’s manufactured disgust toward transgender people to target all LGBTQ+ individuals in government—and beyond.

This is to say nothing of the real-world impact of purging so many trans and queer intelligence officials. As writer Leah McElrath noted in a post on Bluesky, “Someone might want to let Chris Rufo know that many of the best coders, hackers, and cryptographers are LGBTQ. The neurodivergent talent required for these skills often comes with divergence from the mean in other areas.” Writer Noah Smith added, “Don’t go after the trans super-coders. I don’t know why, but a surprisingly large percentage of the country’s top 0.01% software engineers are trans, and also tend to be 10x weirder than other trans people. Just roll with it, unless you want to lose top talent.”

While the framing of trans people’s “weirdness” is grating, the underlying point is well understood: some of the most brilliant minds in computing and cybersecurity come from the transgender community. Their forced removal is likely to be a significant blow to U.S. intelligence capabilities.

These firings also come just days after the quiet repeal of protections meant to prevent intelligence agencies from spying on LGBTQ+ people solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. As Bloomberg reported, “The Office of Intelligence and Analysis posted an updated policy manual late last week that removes references to those characteristics in sections that set guardrails on gathering intelligence.” Now, with far fewer trans and queer people left in the intelligence community, there will be even fewer voices to push back if these tools are turned against us.

I suspect that those in power, including Gabbard, despise trans and queer people far more than they care about the stability of the U.S. government. The mass expulsion of LGBTQ+ employees is not a side effect—it is the point. That the Trump administration is using a roundabout pretext like ERG chat participation to justify a purge is not surprising; it was all but a stated goal. The only way to stop another Lavender Scare is to be loud now—to expose these firings for what they are and to reject the manufactured narrative that trans and queer people are "disgusting and obscene," a narrative Rufo, Trump, and Project 2025 are determined to cement.
