Metastatic lung cancer is the worst. Even if you've quit smoking for 20 years or more, it can get you. Lovely man. Used to chat with a handful of fans in the hotel lobby a full hour before he was due to go on. Damn.
He only took the role in DS9 because he wanted to pay for his kids to go to college without having to sell the house. In an interview with him, they talked about him playing Odo and he said that the crew loved to poke fun at him for it. He talked about how in one episode Odo turned into a rat to spy on people for a scene. None of the other scenes they shot that day involved him, so he had the day off. When he came back the next day to shoot his scenes, he asked how things went. "Great!" the director replied. "You were a terrific rat!"
Oh! Can't believe I forgot! He was the drunken skeleton in "The Last Unicorn!". I still say that movie is almost as good as " The Princess Bride".
What he did was so endlessly amazing. One glance, one subtle change of pose told such a story. One of the very best actors I have ever seen, no matter the medium or genre.
I was just earlier today debating another DS9 binge watch. Might be too sad to watch it right now. Didn’t Nimoy also die of a lung problem?
Not really high profile enough for it's own thread but Marina Sirtis lost her husband last night too (per Twitter)
