Earlier this evening I was driving home along a street which runs next to the local elementary school. A white Mitsubishi was in front of me, going a bit below the speed limit and swerving back and forth from the double yellow lines to almost off the side of the road. On two stop-signs in a row the driver didn't reach a stop until he was halfway into the intersection. Seeing this as a potential problem, I called 911 and reported him as a drunk driver.

Does that make me a dick? :marathon:

Always, ALWAYS, call 911 if you see a potential drunk driver. They may not always get him, but they won't know about it if you don't call.

Don't go BatMobile and chase him down, but, if you can, get his license # and back off while calling the law if you can safely do so.

Below the speed limit, I would say it was a pot head. Could have been an old person, a sleepy person, someone on prescription drugs, etc.

In any case, not someone who should be on the road.

You did the right thing. They are a danger to others at that time...you could be saving a life.

Nope but the only one they will test for or do anything to will the the drinker, the rest get a pass even though it can be just as much or more dangerous. Not that drinking and driving is not a very bad thing, it just seems to be the only thing they enforce. People talking on phones and things are just as dangerous.

I guess that varies by state and region. Anywhere I've lived, LEOs monitor anyone driving erratically. And the increasing number of ordinances against cell phone idiots are encouraging.

I've done something similar probably half a dozen times. Not only permissible but required, IMO.

Speaking of cops.....that one cop in my neighborhood (we have about a gazillion BTW) has gone full retard. Check out this pic of how he was parked today. At a 45 degree angle with about four feet of the car hanging out into the busy morning traffic. Man, I wanted a schoolbus to slam right into his car just because he should know better. He could have parked on the street parallel to the curb like a normal person.

Mind you this is an actual police patrol car, not his own car. They let them take patrol cars to + from work around here.

Nope, just equal enforcement laws against those who drive and pose a danger to the public.

About ten years ago I was heading home from work one night after a late editing session (sometime after 3am) and saw an obviously drunk driver weaving and swerving all over the road. I called 9-1-1 and continued to follow him while I was on the phone with them.

He got on the freeway and ran several cars off the road with his erratic driving. I lost him when he crossed three lanes of traffic at the last second to take an exit ramp to another freeway.

I dunno if they caught him or if he made it home, but at least there weren't any DWI-related accidents reported that night.

Just think if you'd done nothing and the drunk driver had gone on to kill your Uncle Ben.

On a related note, one summer I was downtown and I saw a pristine 1963-ish Pontiac Grand Prix just as the owner was coming out to the car. I complimented him on his car. He looked at me like I had a third head and had just climbed out of the sewer.

So I called the cops and told them I saw him forcing a kid into the trunk.

    God is my co-pilot.
Too bad he'd been drinking whiskey sours all night and making out with those two strippers from the club next door.

    I swear, I can't take him anywhere.

I'd agree if the dangers were equal as well, but driving after enjoying an 'adult cigarette' is not the same as driving after enjoying an adult beverage.

You guys always say that about pot, yet in high school I had several schoolmates involved in wrecks while high on pot. And it was always drunk type wrecks.

One such wreck involved one of our best students. He was also quite athletic, and coordinated. He hit a parked car. :/

Hah, reminds me of new Mexico and the old timer on the horse. Smart ass cop busted him for DWI on a horse. Guy said he could prove that the horse knew the way home with no assistance from him and had witnesses. Judge dismissed the charges.
The next guy was not so lucky, 3rd offense dui. Judge was pissed off and gave him a year in at this remote ass prison in Roswell, nm as opposed to the on only 4 miles away in Las Cruces. That is how that shit worked out there. Judges had some real power out there. Not a lot of lawyers either, most people went right before the man at his desk for traffic type stuff. You plead your case and he gave you what you got.
