I've been thinking about this lately. Wouldn't billionaires want more people to not be poor, so those people could buy the stuff that makes billionaires?

If they thought about things rationally, but they don't. They think that the poor are either "cheap" (just don't want to spend money) or that they waste their money on crap, and that if they just exercised a little financial discipline, the poor wouldn't be poor at all.
