We hit more US COVID deaths than US WWII military deaths today, and will hit more than US WWII military and civilian deaths combined tomorrow.

The US was in WWII for 3 years and 9 months. It's been less than a year for COVID.

COVID has been going on far too long for my tastes. :( I'm hoping that the new mutations don't get too much worse than the original version.

this has been discussed endlessly. Trump's gone, get over it. It's Biden's chance to shine or fail. That said I will say you have a point if you blame every leader of every nation for their COVID deaths. If you aren't willing to do that, then I would say we'll have to agree to disagree.

If firefighters just stand by and watch the fire burn, and everyone inside dies, it's fair to say they bear some guilt for the deaths.

If other firefighters rush into their similar fire and save who they can, but some people still die because it's just too big a fire in too big a building, you wouldn't blame those deaths on those firefighters. They tried. If they make honest mistakes and more people die than were optimally necessary, that's human. You can find fault without finding them legally or morally guilty of letting people die.

Trump largely stood by and watched the fire burn. He let people die. He was not presidential. He did not lead or protect Americans in a way to minimize the virus's effect on our country. He largely did the opposite, largely downplayed or ignored an entire pandemic because he thought he would look bad if he admitted a problem happened on his watch. If there were any other world leaders who acted similarly, they bear guilt for their people's deaths. But pointing fingers at them does not absolve Trump or make him any less of a failure.

Bolsonaro and Obrador both similarly downplayed the virus, and both countries are among the world leaders in COVID deaths.

I've noticed haven't been sick at all in the last year. No cold, especially. Usually I'll get a cold 2-3 times a year. Not at all in the last year. But I already figured that it's due to the amount of handwashing and lack of contact with other people. My work has me in contact with up to 10-12 people a day, as in close contact, previously with hand shaking. So I would guess if most people are the same, reduced physical contact, handwashing, etc.. Hell, I wear nitrile gloves if I'm anywhere in public, stores, getting gas, etc.. Then the chances of infection are probably down everywhere for colds or the flu.

President Biden is going to listen to the scientists and doctors (instead of lobbyists) and reverse Trumps' relaxation of international travel restrictions.

In other words, if you're not an American citizen, people from the UK, Ireland and most of Europe (or people who have recently visited there) won't be allowed to enter the U.S.

EDIT: Forgot Brazil and South Africa.

What part of "we have 4% of the world's population and 20% of the COVID deaths" is unclear?

Our federal response has been ineffective and the provincial leaders (who's ballywick it actually falls under) have blown it to varying degrees.
I'm also kind of perturbed by our own citizens who not only won't take personal precautions, but go out of their way to expose others in their childish "defiance". Seriously.. I don't care if you think it's unfair for bigbox stores to stay open while "mom and pop's" (that you never shop at anyways) go under... I wanna know why the fuck you're in line at that over crowded Costco to start with?

Almost certainly the cherry-picked "looks good unless you realize you shouldn't be plotting/interpreting the data that way" charts he tried to bullshit Jonathan Swan with:

New cases in the USA seem to be in steady decline.

Chart shown is 7 day moving average of new cases, normalized by population.

Daily infections over the last year in the U.S.. By the looks of it, there were spikes/increases following Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and on possibly Halloween and Fourth of July.

Easing up on lockdown didn't help, and to think that back in March-May the numbers seemed huge, 6-9 months later we were seeing nearly a 1000% increase in infections.

Same time period, the daily death rate dropped during the second wave, and then during the third wave death rates increased by less than 200%. Which is still bad, but shows that even though the infections are much higher the death rates didn't increase at the same rate. Maybe better care, identifying the infections sooner and getting care earlier? Could also be that the early deaths were results of other causes, and then the later causes more correctly identified?

Sorry to tell you this but thanks to your completely incompetent federal and state governments, you never actually got out of the first wave.

They're rioting in the Netherlands due to new covid lockdowns? Inconceivable! They have such mild cheese.

I'm always cute, but not always angry. So far it's been a great couple of weeks matter-of-fact. Anyway back on topic, one of my neighbors has COVID. The guy is 64, overweight, out of shape, is pre-diabetic and recently had two "stints" (I'll have to google the word) in his chest for some heart thing. Obviously he's in a pretty high risk category but hopefully he makes it.

It's been 5 whole days and Biden (with Harris pulling the strings and George Soros pulling her strings) hasn't turned the United States into a socialist shit hole yet. I'm deeply disappointed. I think you should visit your neighbor and give him a DVD copy of Bill Maher's greatest rants about obesity and bad nutrition and general fat shaming. I'm sure that will make him feel much better. If I understand correctly, stints are used to force open clogged cardiac arteries. They're also used to force open the bile duct between the gall bladder and the liver. I know more about that particular procedure than I ever wanted to... :brood:

Thanks, you saved me a googling. Don't be disappointed about Biden not tanking our country - trust me he's following a damn good trajectory so far - you just might not hear about it on CNN. ;)
But if you are a fan of CNN (for example) everything is just peachy, so we'll just go with that. And no, I'm not going to fat shame my neighbor, he's a big boy (no pun intended) and it's a free country. He made his bed so now he lies in it. Sadly one of his morbidly obese sons died at age 30 a couple of years ago. And his other morbidly obese son is gaining weight by the minute.
Anyway I had a vague idea about stints but I didn't think about them being used for the bile duct, just for chest issues. Yeah, you don't want to mess with the liver. After the heart & lungs it's the biggest game-changer that's for sure.
