Mee-row! Is the school being proactive and one-upping the kids in their attempt to out-smart them? Or is this yet another example of the tyranny of the minority?
Cougars?! But Mormon men have been doing THAT for years! Check out Warren Jeffs. In light of Mitt Romney, it seems SLC is trying to disassociate in an election year.
This is hilarious. I drove by a school in Scottsboro, AL about a year ago. Snapped a picture of it - they are the "Cougars." Put it on FB and everything, got a lot of laughs.
Yeah. We've got a school around here with Cougars for a mascot. They're already so uptight that I'm just tempted to start something by registering an anonymous complaint.
LOL...I didn't say that *I* would have a problem with it! Just that I could only see where some folks might, if they drew the mascot like that...
Cougars are hot older women hows that offensive?...oh well if the PC crowd didn't oppose it for offending women they'd oppose it because it offends real Cougars.
Well Oregon State's nickname is "Beavers". I've always thought that the girls who would become cheerleaders and the female athletes at that school must have a...special....outlook on life.
Sounds like typical school bullshit. Teach the kids early that their vote means nothing. You guys can vote as long as you vote for what the principal wants. How Kim-Jong-esc of them. If I were a parent, I would be more offended that the school did this kind of thing. The children's vote might not count but the people of that county do when it comes to electing school boards. Now, smart students would find out what elected officials they can take down over this and campaign against them.
Another question. What right do women or anyone else have to "not be offended"? I have read the constitution through a few times and never caught that one. The "new speak" book is getting thinner all the time
I'm still wondering how this vote went. Were the kids allowed to nominate mascots? If so, did they get together and try to pull a fast one on the school board? Did the school board think they had no alternative but to drop the bomb or be left with some embarrassing egg on their faces? If they don't want to encourage creative, independent thinking, they really shouldn't allow it, now should they?
Allowing students of any age to vote on a school mascot is always a somewhat risky proposition. In California, the U-C Santa Cruz is "Banana Slugs". U-C Irvine is "Anteaters". Florida State students chose Seminoles (with the approval of the Florida Seminole Tribe) over "Crackers". If school administrators want to let students have a voice they should be able to do it without being stupid, but then again, maybe that's expecting too much.
Yeah, the nothing vote on a team name... Reminds me of when Toronto got it's NBA franchise. The popular choice had been the "Towers", but the late entry of "Raptors" won out... This isn't an area known for dinosaur finds. :/
This^. What we've got here is a case of Preemptive Political Correctness, which now makes it incumbent upon parents to have this conversation: Kid: Mommy, what's a cougar? Mom: It's a big cat, honey. Like a lion, only smaller. Kid: Is it a bad thing? Mom: [puzzled] No. Why? Kid: 'cos my teacher says we can't have one for a mascot. Mom: [light dawning] Oh. Well, that's because sometimes it can be a name for a woman. Kid: But why is that bad? Mom: ... I don't suppose they could use "puma," because some lawyer on the school board will decide that's a copyright violation. Which means Bama will be hearing from Proctor & Gamble any day now...
Actually, first time I ever heard it was in the derogatory used by younger women pissed at the old broads for stealing the young dudes. So, hey, don't blame male sexism, blame women's hatred of each other.
Meanwhile, the woman in the poster in Muad's post looks all of 31. Who's she supposedly dating, 12-year-olds?
I know that the "in thing" is to act like decisions like this are made solely to keep people from being offended, and that mocking anyone who's suspected of being sensitive to other people's feelings is what all the cool kids are doing ... but I suspect if we see a large-scale downturn in the use of Cougar as a mascot, it'll simply be because schools decide they don't want a mascot that will cause people to snicker. I was going to respond to the bit about the constitution, but I'm leaning toward it being too stupid a statement to bother with.
Heck, I'd say there's a good chance she's in her 20s. An attempt to identify her using tineye.com failed ... there was a result on "bettermilfs.com," but if she's actually a mother, I suspect her oldest kid hasn't graduated from kindergarten yet.
