Not seen a thread on this yet....

The guy says he was carrying the gun for protection. Sounds familiar.

    Thoughts?

Would bag searches at the ticket office be out of the question? After all, that's what you do if you go into a museum or art gallery.

Why not deny admission to anybody with a "large military-type bag" to begin with?

    Define "large military-type bag"

For all we know he had a fanny pack.

"The officer approached Smith, who had taken what police are calling a "tactical position" in the middle of the back row, 30 minutes before the movie began."

So sitting in the back row and the middle is now the tactical position?

Should I wear black next time I go to sit in the back and middle?

NO! We can't have that, innocent lives are at stake! Think of the CHILDREN!!!

Don't you know that GUNS are EVIL??? People can't be trusted with these WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!! The only moral thing to be done is to ban all guns, that way we can be safe and happy. We must TRUST our government to PROTECT US!!!

Not at all. Just yell "La Migra!" and watch them scatter!

BTW when I went to the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning my son's civilian buddy had to check his backpack. Yet my wife was able to carry her humungous purse inside. :thinking:They didn't even ask to look inside the purse or x-ray it. WTF?

I carry that much when I go to the grocery store. I'd feel naked only carrying that much into an urban environment.

I don't know if they do it anymore, but some of the nabes in NY used to do bag searches to make sure you weren't sneaking in food from home instead of paying for their overpriced snacks. One can only imagine that conversation:

"Is that a Hershey bar under the Glock? No way you're taking that in with you. Hand it over, bub!"

Well, I don'tknow how far the second amendment goes, but in the UK a cinema would be treated legally as a private commerical dwelling. Therefore, while public occupier's liability could occur in terms of harm to visitors, the establishment would be able to dictate the terms upon which it's customer's entered.

I have been in places in the US before which banned any form of weapons upon entry so I assume it's the same. Wouldn't it therefore be simply to just say you can't come into a cinema or theatre (as in live theatre) with a knife or gun? This does not interfere with gun carrying on the street and removes any danger to people in closed enviroments such as these. Problem solved, surely?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But there are people right here on this board who'd surrender the Hershey bar before they'd hand over the Glock, even though they'd get the latter back at the end of the film, while the former would probably end up in the usher's locker for later consumption.

You'd also get into a TSA-like situation where it took so long to get into the theater that - horrors! - patrons might miss the 20 minutes worth of ads and promos before the actual start of the film.

And since, like most entertainment media, the goal is not for the patron to enjoy a film, but to rush out to the concession stand and pay $20-30 for a super-sized Coke and a tub of popcorn the size of a small car, We Can't Have That.

Movie theater patronage continues to fall off, anyway, with the growing popularity of Netflix, et al.

Yes, and look around all nervous and twitchy and sweaty, while mumbling to yourself.
