Yep. That's usually the difference between a fun board and a boring one. Anytime you have a board ran by power tripping moderators you end up with a place where everyone lives in a bubble and outsiders with different views are made to feel unwelcome. It's why the BBS has went from a populous place of lively discussion to one that's basically dead.

It is not terribly hard to find someone, especially when you have conversations to search through. People often drop hints to cities and states they are in. Facebook almost advertises all of it. I have seen people befriend others just to get that info on a sock. Then again certain admins could leak it. Way back in my usenet days some dufus from texas tried to pretend he was a lawyer and serious about getting me TOSed from my dial up for my flaming out there, and stupid actually put his real name and address into the communication which they promptly cc'd me in on as they told him to screw off. I am sure a lot of people have drama that is all over their online presence and local drama queens or kings are always happy to share info with someone on the internet for fun. All those interests and contacts can be used to find you.

I am not saying I am doing, or going to do that to anyone, but if you are worried about stuff like stalkers you should be using unrelated accounts. Never lead back to your facebook, friends, family, main email, resume, or things like that. Beware who you meet online because if they become enemies, or even if they are just stupid, they might give out your name. Do not let people use your machine. I was actually amazed anon never got to my real identity online. It was obvious the holes I had, but they did pull up some old Live Journals i thought would never come up. One word tipped them off. I got off of ED by effecting the real world of some of the trolls there. I was outing pedos on gaia online way back in the day when they were allowing them to talk to kids about sex. None of it came from hacking, it was all user stupidity. I have, of course, dealt with stalkers too. You cannot be like me and not have dealt with someone trying to play real world games. I have made efforts to be hidden, but I do not think I am well hidden. When I was over on gaia I had talked personally with people, and it was saved. I hit the mods so hard they started wiping every post I ever made clean. They put some effort into that, not realizing it was doing me a huge favor.

Beware of what you say. The people who put this shit together enjoy it. It is like detective work. By the time they get back to you they have often contacted your friends already. If you ever have some trouble like that again talk to me. I have played some of those games. I know metghods and openings where people will look, and moderators on boards are often willing to let a user delete old posts which might have information some jerkoff could use to find you. My best advice is not to piss people off, or in other words do not make yourself look tasty.

I don't give a fuck if you know where I live, what I look like, hell, even where I work. Some people are so serious about the internets, I'm surprised more people don't die from bleeding ulcers.
