This is not over. The Tennessee Heritage Act protects statues based on the original status of the property; not the final status. Selling the land did not change the original status of the land the statues was erected on. Since they were protected in the past, they will be protected again. That covers the Jefferson and Forrest statues in Memphis.

The Forrest statue has the additional protections afforded it as a Headstone - a grave marker.

@Federal Farmer isn't saying he agrees with the assessment that slaves were treated well by anyone, only that some were treated "relatively" better than others. Which is true. But saying "slaves" and "treated well" in the same sentence is just a bad way of putting it.

It is the way people who whitewash chose to put it because better has a positive ring to it where less shitty has a negative ring to it. What does it sound like when we have a statue that is claimed to be of someone who was better because at some point after killing his own kind because he wanted to enslave black people, and then founding an organisation who's goal is to keep them as less than whites in society after being freed, but the Klan was supposedly too violent for him so now he should be regarded as a champion of civil rights because he was better than the others? What does that sound like to a black person? That is a smack in their face to have a monument on state land regarding them as a hero. They are not heroic. They are a nasty blight on America. Even our a founding fathers shouldn't be defined as heroic as they allowed the evils of slavery to exist in America. The whitewashers want to regard them as wise and infallible because then slavery was better because they were wise. Well they were not wise. They were rapey, nasty, criminal types who wanted more money for themselves and to stop cutting England in on the rum and slave trade. They slaughtered Indians, abused their kids, owned and raped and beat slaves, they fought amongst themselves for the profits of the new world. They murdered their neighbors and formed criminal bands to rip off settlers and pioneers who were ripping off the natives. Yes, they might have made the original constitution with a couple of decent amendments, but it was made to empower the white male, and the only reason they had any freedoms in there was because they did not want the federal government telling their religion who to fuck over like the English and Europeans were doing to the protestants. They wanted to fuck the people over they wanted to, so they wanted states rights for their locals to shit on people because they had to run to America to avoid the European Catholic power structure.

It is amazing that they made anything decent, and we have to recognize these were not entirely wise people. We have started to change for the better despite their weakness and shortcomings. He was disowned by the Calvary Survivor's Group based in Augusta, GA for his comments in the speech as well as his public comments that blacks should be allowed to be doctors and lawyers.

The merits of the man aren't even the point. The point is people are honoring him for his military service in a rebellion against the United States, a rebellion fought primarily to protect slavery. That's why he's revered today in the South. The "Lost Cause" and all that.

Want to honor a real warrior for civil rights? Try Martin Luther King. Put up statues of him.

You know, if you want to memorialize people for being dead more than 25 years, having been really good at warfare, albeit as the US' enemies, and having been emphatic about their innocent intentions after they lost, I have several countrymen who check all of those boxes and have seen scarcely any statues in their honour erected in your country or mine.
