I like Amanda Palmer's response. She makes some very good points in the generic sense, though I'm not so sure they are accurate specifically about Miley Cyrus. Other observation: this is fantastic public discourse. It is open, honest, and complex. I wish more of this would happen in our jaded, 140 character society.
I would like to know how either Palmer or O'Conner really know what goes on behind the scenes in Camp Cyrus.
Palmer actually mentions that in a few paragraphs-how her and Sinead's celebrity experiences are far more in common than either of them with star baby Cyrus. Honestly, I think this is O'Connor desperately trying to be relevant by picking up the banner of the tut tutting soccer moms. It's not like her music career has done anything for the last decade. Palmer nails her motivations as being that of a faded star perfectly.
Problem for Miley Cyrus is that she is steadily objectifying and depersonalizing herself. For now I'm sure she's laughing on her favorite drug "Molly" straight to the bank. However, what happens when someone gets bored of that painting in their bathrooms? You put it in a box in the attic, forget where you put it, and then you hang something else. The public loves dynamic personalities, but boobs, balls, and stunts in the public eye are very temporary. Her career is going to end up terminating the same way she's redefining herself... Like a huge 20 year old tube television being tossed into a landfill to make room for a sexy new flat screen. If she wants to act like a tool rather than a person, that's how we're going to treat her.

Well I don't have an issue with admitting Sinead is a talent well beyond her "pop hit". But I think you go a bit far. exceptional talent, on its own brings it's fame... Janis Joplin was the most versatile/exceptional female voice of the past four decades.. granted she was more bluesy and soulful...But she would "rock" Sinead back into the choir and stand alone in the spotlight.. just saying...
