Having been out of town the last few days. One thing I noticed is that the Hotel I stayed at and all the restaurants in MS did not allow smoking. Is NC the last state to allow this basic freedom of choice? Just wondering.
Well its not really freedom of choice because second hand smoke is harmful to the rest of us non-smokers.
Yeah, but vented hotel rooms don't have this problem. They usually have a separate area for smokers and non smokers, so this is not the problem.
Not sure if it's still the case, but Ohio used to allow smoking in any public area. Attended a couple of cons where the speakers had to ask people not to smoke in the conference rooms because they were going hoarse by the end of the weekend.
Even when I did smoke, I could never stand to smoke inside. If anything, it gave me an opporunity to get up and outside for a breath a fresh air, so to speak.
The last couple hotels I've stayed in proclaimed to be 100% smoke-free and would attach huge fines for smoking in the rooms, but they still managed to reek like ashtrays.
Freedom of choice in this case lies with the owner of the establishment. They get to decide whether or not they want people smoking inside their building.
Most hotels have the option, but some, especially new-construction hotels, are totally non-smoking. Some states might have laws that fully restrict smoking on commercial premeses, however.
Well then answer me this. Ever been to a tractor pull, monster truck show, dirt bike race inside an arena? Why is this vehicle exhaust not harmful to the workers and others? I think car exhaust is more harmful than 2nd hand cig smoke.
Sure, if you were exposed to it 24/7/365 the way you would be if you lived with a smoker and/or worked in a bar or restaurant where the majority of the patrons smoked.
It was banned here in Lincoln a couple years ago. Ironically the smokeless bar was one of the early businesses to go under. This place had absolutely horrible service but it always kept very busy as it was the only nonsmoking bar in the city.
Banning smoking in rental cars and hotel rooms is just another way of protecting the owners' assets. That smoky smell is impossible to get rid of and really degrades the value of the property.
"The rest of us" is free to frequent non smoking hotels. No reason to ban it alltogether (if that is the case).
