Do what you want. But you're still a hypocrite unless you treat other non veterans the way you treat me.
I think that is an exaggeration. I remember saying I wished I had served in the military when I was just out of high school or college and thought it would've done me some good (though note, either of those times would've probably meant I never saw combat no matter what). My seeing the recruiter was AFTER the enlistment age was raised and he basically said I could serve no useful purpose. I'll freely admit that my interest then was heavily motivated by being out of a job as that was my worst period of unreliable employment. At any rate with a wife and infant daughter (just after 9-11) I was not going to run off to the military even though I do advocate military solutions often. As for the "chicken coop". I used to store several thousand books and magazines in my dads broiler barn back in the early 2000s. Since I have the house now I store most on his enclosed back porch. At any rate, the point remainds that thousands of pages of material that I have read are NOT easily accessible to me.
You do know that they dropped the age back down again after the war, right? I know a guy who joined just in time - they dropped the maximum age a couple of months after he joined. Talk about the skin of your teeth! BTW joining the infantry at 39 is INSANE! I can't even imagine doing that - that's about the age most soldiers retire, and he is just joining? My hat is off to him though.
I'm always curious about this, and how I'd get on from a physical point of view (despite having no interest in being in any military). There are plenty of fit 39 year olds. Is it really that onerous physically that they'd have problems?
OMG!! I've been on a sub too! And since I read your post, everyone must defer to my vast knowledge on the subject. As a matter of fact, I've been on this one several times as well. I am an experienced submariner by any standard.
Sleep deprivation, being out in extremes of heat and cold, rolling around in the mud at 0500 in the morning, etc. etc. My son is in The Army now stationed at an infantry base (but he's not infantry, he's medical) and talks with a lot of infantry NCO's while at work. Many of them are beat down with a lot of injuries like bad knees, bad backs, bad shoulders, etc. and of course mentally burned out from doing it for so many years. Many are combat vets with PTSD and physical combat injuries too. It's no picnic. And think the older you get, the harder it is to keep up with the younger guys. That's the real hard part. I was not infantry but when I retired after 22+ years of the constant political bullshit and chaos and brainwashing classes and fifty million things to keep up with daily (other than your actual job!) I was going bonkers.
You do realize that Archangel, Lanzman and myself have ALL served on U.S. Navy ships at some point in the last 15 to 20 years? Whatever was written 20 or 30 years ago is not what the Navy is now.
Quit fucking deflecting. Whether we think you get off on war or not isn't the issue. Your always advocating war as a first solution and encouraging others to enlist while you ducked outta service using one excuse after another is.
Yeah, no. I've met plenty of men (and women, more increasingly) that join up specifically FOR the purpose of having their family being financially set. Given your previous comments about life insurance, we know that's not a priority of yours, but that excuse of "oh, I have a family" is just that. Hell, family is the only reason I could see anyone doing this shitty ass work for 20 years.
I had not really considered that "Big Red" was IIRC based on a cruise aboard the U.S.S. Nebraska in 1998 which of course was 17 years ago. I had just assumed that since we still had the Ohio class SSBNs serving that the things recounted were still valid. That is a legitimate point Anna.
Because you're a chickenshit that just didn't want to. Just like my mom doesn't try that hard to look for a job because she'd much rather be taken care of any and everyone else. Just like Volpone quit the staff after two minutes because then he no longer had a reason to bitch about not having a voice on the board. From your posts, you get off on whining and being a victim. If ya don't wanna join, no one would care if you weren't such a slobbering hound over the idea of everyone else going. Say hi to that kid whose legs got blown off for me.
Why would I have any special fear of joining the military? You of all people should know that the likelihood of me getting killed or injured would not be that great.
So, you should've had no problem signing up when you had the chance. After all, only 5000 folks have died from the Iraq conflict.
So you're saying that the ONLY reason someone could have for not joining the military is fear of death or injury?
High school counselors routinely promote that option to various students in addition to giving students tests for their applicable aptitudes for the military and freely making students available for military recruiters. So you are admitting that there are legitimate reasons not to join the military and there can in fact be no fear of death or injury involved?
So what was yours? By your own admission you were between jobs yet again and had a baby to feed. And seeing as you move every other year anyway, you'd have probably been better off. Of course. It's called "having other options in life." Which is why you don't have too many AP students enlisting, even though they have the higher ASVAB scores. And again, you were without a job and had a family to feed, so....
You would never accept it. But I did not want to be so far away from my extended family. And my wife didn't want to move so far away from hers. I know countless people do it without hesitation but I've never wanted to be so far away from my family that I couldn't go see most of them in person pretty much at will. The furthest I've ever lived from my parents for example is roughly four hours driving time. Same with Amy's parents.
