I saw Solo about two weeks ago. It's the first SW movie I have not seen on opening day, and I've seen all of them on opening day (including the 1977 original and even the shitty prequels). It was a decent enough film. Not great by any stretch, but serviceable. That seems to be Ron Howard's modus operandi... no flashes of brilliance but competent filmmaking. However, the big character reveal near the end just pissed me right off. It was entirely unnecessary and was there pretty much for fanwank purposes only. Plus, the call-out to the prequel trilogy got my hardcore SW geek blood boiling.
You saw the original on opening day? I had you down as a grumpy thirtysomething! Never would have pegged you as nearing fifty.
Yep. University Theatre on Bloor Street in Toronto. It closed down about 20 years ago. I think it's a Pottery Barn now. No, I'm a grumpy fortysomething.
If memory serves, I saw ESB at the Runnymede on Bloor West. Which also closed down. I'm sensing a pattern here...
ever spend part of a night in here? I can't count how many movies we saw here... But yeah, they're all getting knocked down for condos while the world goes to iMax
Thinking about movie theaters where I saw countless films that have since gone out of business makes me feel sad. Pieces of my childhood, lost forever. I can still remember the theaters where I saw Empire, Raiders, Tron, Goonies, TWOK, Spaceballs, Wargames, Temple of Doom, Superman II & III & IV. Every theater....long gone.
Saw so, so, so many movies at these theaters... Fox Theater - Fremont, CA [demolished, replaced with new theaters, those demolished] This the earliest theater I can remember going to...I'm sure I saw movies here that I don't even remember. Especially memorable: Grease, Clash of the Titans, Zorro: The Gay Blade, The Empire Strikes Back. Piedmont Theater - Oakland, CA Very fuzzy memories of this place...only went with my dad on a handful of occasions Memorable: The Cat from Outer Space, Gus (about a football-playing mule[!!!]), The Muppet Movie, The Empire Strikes Back Century Theater - Sacramento, CA [demolished, replaced with new theaters] Especially memorable: Star Wars, Superman II. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, McHale's Navy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Van Helsing (ugh!) Cinedome - Sacramento, CA [demolished, replaced with new theaters] Especially memorable: Batman, Die Hard, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Untouchables, Beverly Hills Cop (one of the few movies I ever went to just with my mom, she laughed like hell), Quigley Down Under (a particularly memorable date) Greenback 6/U.A. The Movies - Citrus Heights, CA [*corrected* now a Sam's Club] Especially memorable: Silence of the Lambs, JFK, Tape Heads (awful film, I only remember it because of the girl I was with) Since this place opened when I was in high school, I think of it as "the new theaters"...now gone. Cinema 6 - Citrus Heights, CA [demolished, whole shopping center completely renovated] Especially memorable: Raiders of the Lost Ark U.A. Sunrise Mall - Citrus Heights, CA Especially memorable: A Fish Called Wanda, Night of the Comet Sacramento 6 Drive-In - Rancho Cordova, CA Especially memorable: Back to the Future, Karate Kid II, The Survivors, Cobra, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome 49er Drive-in - Sacramento, CA [closed] Only went one time - my best friend and I saw a great double feature: Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Running Scared. Cinedome East - Fremont, CA [demolished] Especially memorable: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Alien 3 Cinedome West - Newark, CA (only about 1/4 mile from the Cinedome East, above) [demolished, replacement theater at new location in same shopping center] Especially memorable: Second Sight (awful!), Batman Forever Century Park 12 - Redwood City, CA [demolished] Especially memorable: Sister Act, Armageddon, Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, South Park, Private Parts, Batman and Robin, Titanic, Tomorrow Never Dies, L.A. Confidential, The Avengers (the one based on the old spy show), Con Air The "cheap-o" movie theater we used to go to--the Madison Square 4 in Sacramento--is apparently so forgotten, that I can't find a picture of it online. Once spent all day there watching Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back over and over. Also saw King Kong there. Also, the Crestview Theater in Carmichael, CA also seems to have little trace on the web, but I remember seeing Superman: The Movie and a re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey there. There's another few theaters I can recall going to quasi-regularly as a kid, but I'm not certain now what or where they were.
Cinema 6 is the Target center now. Some of the buildings still resemble the photo. Was the greenback one where the current greenback Cnetury is now? By the 80 ramp?
No, that one used to be the Cinedome (Garfield and Greenback). The Greenback/U.A. was near Greenback and Auburn IIRC.
Can't recall ever going to the Rio. Isn't that a sex shop now? I grew up in the west end of T.O. so I saw a ton of movies at the Westwood.
Probably... it was pretty nasty to begin with given that it was also a porn parlour for winos, so a sex shop would be apropos (Sorta like how the LCBO on Spadina and Baldwin was a punk bar before it's present purpose). $4 for four movies was always a good way to spend the down part of an acid trip. Yeah, Dad took us to the Westwood on visitation weekends fairly often up until around '82. He worked shifts so more often than not it was his opportunity to see his sons and catch a few hours sleep. We'd also go to the theatre at Square One sometimes, but I think he tried to avoid that because of the inevitable hour I'd want to spend at the model store and the $10 in quarters the arcade next to the theatre would cost him.
