Going to fix a hand me down computer today that can run at 2GHZ. Can't stand my 600Mhz caveman computer anymore. :)

    Anyways.......

I'm pretty sure the hard rive on the computer is the problem so I'm going to replace it. It's a Enhanced IDE Hard Drive. I saw a nice 500gb SATA type drive for sale for $100.

Can I use a SATA type drive or do I need to stay with EIDE?

I'd like to get the SATA because it's 500gb and as I collect parts for the new computer I can simply rip it out of the computer, format it and use it.

The biggest IDIE I can find for $100 or less is 320GB. No I don't want to go to Newegg. I want this drive today so I'm willing to pay the premium in price. I've had it with my caveman computer.

I can't even play the cheap ten dollar games anymore. :sob:

Yeah, I think you'd have to either have the model of the motherboard handy, or failing that, take a pic of it's guts and post it here.

It it's a 600mhz machine it is pretty much certain you don't have a SATA port.

You can get IDE to SATA converters but they might be expensive if buying nearby, maybe ring a few local stores and see if any have them for a reasonable price?

Doesn't matter at this point. Problem is more the nthe hard drive. Still stuck with the old caveman one. Did upgrade the drive from 20GB to 320GB with a fresh install of XP and other assorted programs.

Still on track to build a new computer now by Dec 2008. Got a hard drive, CD-RW drive, and next paychecks goal: New monitor to replace the one that has lines going across the top of it.

Now with the new hard drive when I want to take it out and use it in the new computer when do I format it? Before pulling it out of the computer or after putting it in the new one?

Also is SATA king now or is IDIE still usable?

Depends on the motherboard, SATA is getting a lot more common but I think IDE will be around for quite a while yet since so many drives use it.
