It isn't really a new offer. It will likely fail since NK wants some degree of reciprocity.

We're assuming Fat Boy Kim is on about NK removing its nukes, he could be meaning the US denukes...

That would possibly be the most epic troll in history, and the ensuing war possibly worth the resulting Twitter meltdown from Trump.

Why would anyone believe any claim by the North Koreans?

And the South Koreans have had Stockholm Syndrome for decades.

Remember the "agreed framework" the Norks negotiated with the Clinton administration? Good times, good times . . .

I heard an interview with a wonk who was an expert on North Korea. According to him, "negotiations" with North Korea mean figuring out a way to give NK what they want, not trying to figure out a good solution.

It would be even greater if Trump could tell the difference between North and South Korea. Otherwise, that could be a serious impediment to talks with North Korea (e.g. he's actually talking to South Korea).

Oh wait--Trump said he spoke with North Korea, but it was actually South Korea

Sure, the North will give up their nukes (with a few squirreled away just in case)! All we have to do is lift all sanctions, give them a couple trillion dollars to feed their population (with more than a little to grease the right people’s pockets), a couple billion dollars each year until the planet experiences heat death, and let them forcibly reunite with the South. I mean, that’s not to much to ask, is it?

Talk is cheap. Cheaper than war, so if they want to talk, let's talk.

Of course he is willing to give up nukes. He knows his country is not doing shit with their military, but those nukes are a huge bargaining chip and he is going to get something for himself with them. That is all little Kim wants. He knows he will never be a big world leader, but he will be a big fish in his country and live like a corrupt dictator while his people suffer.

We don't even need to feed their people. We just need to pay Kim off. Not that it would be the best solution.

Exactly. I'd be willing to give them money to feed the population, but that's about it. They should also be made to surrender and sign a peace treaty ending the war.

he already does this. But Kim assumes that everyone is so afraid of nukes that he can get the gravy train rolling even better than it is. Fuck Kim - I say don't give them shit because the average people won't get fed anyway. Ignore his ass - totally ignore him. If other countries want to engage with him, so be it.

Oh, I’m with you completely. But, anything that doesn’t involve immediate monitoring and inspection by an independent UNSCOM is a non-starter as far as I'm concerned.

If you don't get rid of all of his capabilities, which is near impossible, then any deal leads to further concessions because he always has leverage. He is most probably not going to shoot off a nuke due to MAD, but he may become mentally unstable and do so. I believe in the eventuality of some nuke getting detonated from one of these rogue nuclear powers just because eventually someone will pop, but the alternative is bloody wars and a brutal removal of crazies from power while installing unreliable allied leadership which will be opposed by terrorism. I cannot say I see any decent solution.

The crazy thing is that this 'win' if it happens is what NK was asking for during Obama. They were begging for one on one negotiations with the US. Knowing that any deal NK made with the US wouldn't be worth the paper it was written on we demanded Six Nation talks. North & South Korea, US, Japan and most importantly Russia and China. That way the agreement would have teeth as Russia and China could hold them accountable (and rest of world could hold Russia and China).

So, uh, yay. Jaw jaw is better than war war, but hopefully Mr. Master Negotiator knows what he is doing.

It's also been used as a delaying tactic by NK before.

I'm all for genuine talks, but realistically this is probably them shouting "wolf" again as sanctions bite and so are looking for breathing space.

It'd be nice to see the US, SK and NK sign a non-aggression pact, but even then we'd just be starting a stopwatch to see how long it took NK to get offended by something or the regime changed and hostilities recommenced as the new order waggled it's collective dick about.

Saying that the ROK can defend itself completely misses the point of our forces.

US forces in Korea are there as a trip-wire force. They guarantee that any attack on the ROK will result in full and immediate US support. Which would result in the eradication of the DPRK as a political entity.

This disallows the DPRK from using even the threat of armed unification as a negotiating tactic.

interesting Anc.....then the US military needs to stay there BUT not give the NK jack shit. Not one fucking dime. If China wants to support them financially let them - encourage them in fact. NK won't attack them or SK (with us there) so why should we spend our money enabling their dictatorship ass?
