Stanford gets bitch slapped for attempting to remove 'American' from it's computer infrastructure

So Stanford pissed off the community around it and was starting to get strong negative feedback from the rest of the country for its choice to remove words from its IT infrastructure, ie the verbiage used on its websites and coding. Some of it is the usual nonsense such as using the term 'drop by' instead of 'walk in', because no person in a wheelchair is ever exposed to the idea that some people still walk.

But when you try to tell people not to use the word 'American' because we aren't the only country in the Americas the reaction was pretty steadfast against that response.

I'm sure this was done to try to be inclusive to hispanics (or latinos and latinx, but even they hate that one) as they have a cultural bias against using the term and find it offensive. Many nations in Latin and South America teach that there is only one continent, America, as opposed to North America and South America, and that referring to US citizens as being American somehow denigrates the rest of the members of the continent.

Of course, we are also the only nation in the world that has the word 'America' in its name, and it's just as silly to require citizens of the United Mexican States not to refer to themselves as Mexican. After all, the name Mexico existed before the nation, and pre-Colombian Mexico, the geographic area that the current nation state is named after, included land that now is a part of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador.

Anyway, pushback on this one was swift, with Stanford already apologizing and saying they embrace the word 'American.' Because it should not have been termed 'harmful.'

It's a process. I'm all for re-evaluating how we do things, but that has to be in context of our population, our history and what we want our values to be.

'More woke nonsense' from the left could be applied to this, sure. The problem is that most people who say that would also apply it to people getting medical treatment for gender dysphoria, for evaluating the racial discrimination clearly at work in our criminal justice system, and even who should be allowed to marry who, whether it be based on sex or race.

    And honestly, fuck those guys.

This is the result of the past twenty years of teaching students to hate America and blaming white people for everything.

When its been pointed out to FF and UA that their Discovery whines in MC sound exactly like the racists who wrote letters about Uhura on TOS (complete with screengrabs of said letters), did you notice they didn't for an instant go "yikes, my point and cause is so noble and pure, I need to get it across better. I should reframe things so as not to sound like racists"?
    Did ya notice that?
    What did they do instead?
"Fuck you, I don't care if I sound like them, I'm fucking right! :bailey:".

Have you seen any growth in FF since then?
If so, you've either got better eyes, and/or a more charitable heart than I do.

It's weird, even severely mentally challenged children get things right by random chance now and then.
    You're always wrong.
How the Hell do you pull off being worse than random chance?
    You're a scientific miracle!

There's a bit of truth to that, most people in academia are for critical thinking and objective analysis, and to be sure America has many, many faults to be criticized. Some take it farther than that, and IMO they are wrong.

I even see it in my friends and their peer group, people in their 40s to 50s that are highly disabused of this nation.

But let's face it, America's problems aren't in the past. Racism is quite real, now. Wealth inequality has become the worst at any point in time in our nation. Corruption in politics is out in the open thanks to a far right SCOTUS and Citizen's United.

And the Republican party has embraced fascism openly after using foreign ties to get the most corrupt POTUS ever into office who then not only helped foreign powers at the expense of our own but then tried to overthrow our democracy and install himself as a dictator.

That's a lot to react to, and far, far more important than trying to parse language so as not to hurt people, as misguided as that attempt might have been in this case.

I might disagree with some of the actions of the so called 'woke' crowd now and then, but I know they are trying to do better even if I don't always agree with how they do so.

I'll never, ever vote Republican again because they clearly are trying to do worse, because they know that in 20 years the kids in school now while vote them into oblivion.

    And deservedly so.

    would he be, though?

look at his progression during his career and there's no reason to doubt that he wouldn't have been as out in left field by today's measure.

This is not the left. This is a bunch of administrators from one college in CA. There is no actual power in this, nor are there any laws like the ones passed by the right censoring the speech of teachers in school so they are not allowed to mention GLBT people exist.

The only people passing PC laws are your heroes like Ron Desantis. Some libertarian you are.

Let me get this straight, all they wanted to do was replace "America" or "American" with the more accurate and more precise "U.S."?

And people are outraged by this?

God, what a bunch of whiny babies.

These are the same people who think mentioning GLBT people exist to a child will turn them gay.

I can understand the point of choosing your words in a way that recognizes the person you are talking to is a person deserving respect so you do not want to hurt them by mistake, but I also have to recognize every republican really has a desire to harm others.

Like I said, the only people making laws against speech are republicans. Stanford is a school, and we all know republicasns want our schools to be indoctrination points for Jesus and Jingoism.

In the end what does @Bill Carson have to worry about now that he is on his subway chef career path and the only person who is going to tell him what to say is his Manager. Having worked in customer service I can say he should get used to not offending the customer with his republican sensibilities.

Well, as reading doesn't appear to be fundamental...

There's no other nation with the word 'America' in it. There are other United States - the United Mexican States.

And I'm pretty sure somewhere along the way liberals decided that people should get to call themselves what they want to call themselves. I guess that only applies to groups that you approve of.

And you are outraged over this?

    What a whiny baby. LOL.

I particularly enjoy the hypocrisy of the near unanimous usage of the term Gringo for all of us English speakers north of Mexico, considering the call for Americans to change their own appellation comes from their outrage. Why? Gringo literally means 'Greek.'

Why is it we don't hear the far left lecturing latinos over this clear misusage of the term? It's like calling Native Americans Indians.

Ah, but that would require some level of internal consistency.

Still not the liberals. This is not part of any liberal agenda.

If you want to blame out of touch college admins doing performative shit they think students want then I am with you. However, there are no radical liberal people looking at this and thinking nailed it while overpaying for their education.

The liberals would like to make education far less expensive and better which would clearly eliminate the overpaid, out of touch, and useless admins who thought anyone would want this.

An honest person and not a tucker felcher like yourself would note the backlash came fgrom everywhere including the liberals who did not want or agree with this.

A little hint for you is to log back into your @Bill Carson account and argue against real liberal issues rather than manufacturing this one and pretending liberals are for this.

No one is arguing for this to happen, even the idiot admins gave it up as soon as they saw it did not fool anyone.
