    Ha!

Form Tobias Richter no less (who, for those who don't know, is a visual artist who does the ship designs for the Ships of the Line series).

I feel the same, it was the same for me, I even went to the Leicester Square premieres of First Contact and Nemesis. But this one I just can't get remotely excited about.

I don't give two shits if Star Trek fanbois don't like the film. I'm not watching it as a Star Trek fan, because as far as I'm concerned old Trek has been dead for a long time. I'm going in free of that baggage, and I want to be entertained. As long as it accomplishes that, then I'm good.

I want to be entertained as a Star Trek fan. I suspect I will be pleased, as I don't dwell on the fanboi minutia, where a mistake here or there makes me cry that it isn't Trek.

Whether or not I end up agreeing with the reviewer's conclusion, this is a valid point.

For what it's worth, Rotten Tomatoes is ranking "Star Trek Into Darkness" at 88% Fresh!

And to cut Dayton off at the pass, the first two Transformers movies were rated at 57% and 20% Rotten.

So much for all the fanboi weeping and gnashing of teeth that the new Star Trek is a terrible movie.

The view that's emerging about STID is "a fun ride, Cumberbatch is good, decent Kirk/Spock bromance, somewhat derivative of and referential to TWOK, not real deep."

In other words: better than MOST Trek movies released over the years. :diacanu:

Of course, I was hoping for "Makes The Dark Knight look like Deuce Bigalow," but it sounds like this one will be a perfectly good summer thrill ride.

Looks like Iron Man 3 is going to be the meatier picture.

Can't say until I've seen 'em both. Iron Man 3 was pretty darn good, though.

My big hope for this summer remains Man of Steel.

You see that is where BD (and no doubt others) and I disagree. Not watching as a Star Trek fan is perfectly legitimate way of taking in the film.

But it isn't for me. To me Star Trek has been a 40 year investment of time, money and effort in my life (the earliest I can remember in about 1973). Which is about 90% of the time I've been alive.

So when I watch Star Trek, pure entertainment is a worthy goal but it isn't my dominant one. I want to see Star Trek that expands and enhances the Star Trek franchise as a whole. I do not for a minute think that is true of the Abramsverse.

And I want to see a continuation of Firefly/Serenity. Just like your version of Trek, it ain't ever going to happen.

Oh you never know. Fan made productions are getting better all the time. And with advances in CGI and especially with CGI that interacts with human actors who knows what the future holds in the next decade or two.

I'm convinced that at some point the technology will exist for someone to scan all the Original Series episodes and movies, all the dialogue from other productions Trek actors have appeared in and then quickly edit them together as needed to create complete episode length stories.

Only really better than TFF, GEN, INS, NEM. Yeah, that's right, I'd still take TMP over Abrams Trek. :bailey:

No, not really. Those movies weren't outstanding or anything, but they still had more developed plots and something akin to character development. I'd actually put the first Abrams Trek movie just about on par with TVH, but at least in TVH you could actually see what was happening for the entire movie. :diacanu:

No new Enterprise for NuTrek 3, take a look at these from the newest trailer. It's not the Enterprise that does a splash down into San Francisco Bay, it's the Vengeance.

The hull is angular around the deflector dish.

And the nacelles are also angular, not rounded.

Here's how I rank the movies so far, even with the admitted flaws of some oft hem, strictly on entertainment value and re-watchability:

    1. TWOK
    2. TUC
    3. TVH
    4. JJ-1
    5. TMP
    6. TSFS
    7. FC
    8. FF
    9. Gen
    10. Ins
    11. Nem

I project the new one to take over the #4, #5 or #6 slot. Can't go higher than #2 (and THAT is exceedingly unlikely) and almost certainly can't be worse than #8

    TMP over TSFS??
    Really??

C'mon, Christopher Lloyd alone gives that one more of a pulse than TMP.

Very close, but the Marcus boy and the Psudo-Savvik REALLY drag it down for me (and yes, I know most folks like Curtis better than Alley in the role, but i don't)

As for Marcus, no great hero had a worse cast son in movie history until Indiana Jones' son turned up.

Not bad, Nova. This is mine.

    1. TWOK
    2. TMP
    3. FC
    4. TUC
    5. TVH
    6. JJ-1
    7. Gen
    8. TSFS
    9. FF
    10. Ins
    11. Nem

On TSFS, it loses a lot of points for being a giant reset button.

Normally I'd have gone to see Into Darkness last night, but decided to watch 1979 Soviet sci-fi flick Stalker instead.

Nemesis and Insurrection don't count as Star Trek. Also, these rankings are ordinal, but with the exception of Generations and Final Frontier, I love every movie on the list. Gen and TFF are tolerable, which sets them apart from the two that don't make the list.

Expecting JJ2 to hit the top 5. FC for me was all about the Zephram Cochrane aspect rather than the Bor(in)g...TUC, the analog to contemporary events. THat is, less about the characters and more about the universe they live in. Conversely, TWoK and JJ succeeded as expositories of those characters. Granted that the latter was an origins story and so used a broad brush, but frankly, so did TWoK in it's nature as a sequel to an episode. It's just dressed up in soundbites of classic literature rather than contemporary pop culture.

Common thing here? Most folks seem to agree the reboot is the best thing since TUC to hit the screen.
