"criticism" requires analysis, not simply being anal. yours tends to be based on monolithic perceptions. for instance, my analysis of the monetary system overlooked enough of evidence to the contrary to be incorrect. However at the same time we're seeing/have long seen on screen that everyone has basic life needs met indicating that there's reasonable, albeit not universal, post scarcity conditions in the UFP. your points may be correct, your argumentation is juvenile and basic.
Oh, it's just the usual spiel where haters think if you don't hang your head, and go "yes sir", they're victims. It's pretty much the "religious freedom", playbook.
He deleted his post, but Dicky went off on @Professor Sexbot for criticizing Alex Kurtzman and something, something agendas, something, something, YouTube videos, something, something butthurt fan boys trying to get Kathleen Kennedy fired, it's not going to work, quit complaining, try a new approach, blah, blah, blah.
And that prevented you from doing something how? And then how did it keep that magical power after I deleted it? If I unwittingly have super powers, I wanna know how they work, and what the upper limits are.
I’ve been rewatching bits and pieces of Voyager. I sort of appreciate it more now. It’s still nowhere as good as DS9 and it’s mostly a copy of TNG but I like it better than Enterprise and there were some really great individual episodes here and there... the overall continuity is a fucking mess and the character development for anyone not named Seven was nil. Like I happened to catch ‘The Killing Game’. Sort of fun in a ‘Patterns Of Force’ kind of way... but then you realize half the ship was destroyed and it is perfectly fine in the next episode. BSG did a way better job with a similar premise. But Seven of Nine was the best written character in the show and Jeri Ryan did a good job making Seven a real character and not just hyper sexualized eye candy. I’m looking forward to see what she brings to the new show. I’m sure she is happy to not be in that catsuit.
I caught his ill-conceived, poorly written, completely baseless diatribe. Disliking a show or calling someone a Mary Sue doesn't make me a misogynist any more than liking STP and STD makes him a feminist. Good drama is borne out of characters having to make choices. A character makes a choice, then something doesn't work out for them, and then they have to make another choice. This also moves the story along. By facing obstacles, we see who a character is a person, and, at the end of all of those choices, they are hopefully a different person than they were before those choices. This isn't happening much in STP or STD. Whenever Picard encounters a character, we see a bit of backstory about their relationship with a bit of mystery around that backstory. He's not really making any choices which seriously affect the outcome of the story in the present. It's: Character doesn't want to join Picard. Picard does one thing. Character joins. Where are the obstacles? This whole show is just a bunch of stuff that happens wrapped around a mystery that needs to be solved. But, no, I'm a misogynist because I accused Kurtzman (never mentioned Kennedy) of being a one trick "mystery box" writer with an agenda.
The post is fading from my memory, but I do know the "m", word never figured in it at all. Is this thing gonna become fucking "Rashomon", now?
Oh, yeah, I remember now. Yeah, I gave a mountain of examples of fans of a property ending up in charge falling on their face, and non-fans of properties doing a really good job as evidence against the "they need to love the property", argument. It had nothing to do with misogyny, and Kennedy got mentioned for a nanosecond to make some other point. Yeah, I killed it cuz it grew too huge, and I didn't want to derail the Trekonomics discussion. I thought that was more interesting.
There is something in the criticism that the show is taking it's time to get anywhere. It still feels like things are being set up. And we're halfway through the first season. Like I say, the payoff will be important. And as I learned the hard way a couple of weeks ago, I'm out of this thread until tomorrow since some of you people get to see new episodes a day earlier than me.
Episode 5 makes Episode 4 look like Oscar material. Soap-operaesque dialogue between Raffi and her son. Maddox reveals that Doj has a sister which we already knew! And she's on the artifact which we already knew! Agnes is a double agent which we pretty much already knew! And now our favorite brand loyalists will be out here saying "Memba Seven??? Memba Quark??? Memba Icheb???"
Hmmm... I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't look like 7 of 9 will be joining the crew. I was really touched when 7 asked Picard about regaining his humanity after his assimilation. She's been struggling with this all this time despite the obvious growth in her character. Loved the setting in this one. Freecloud felt like a real lived in world... Moreso than other planets in Trek. I'm not to sure how we were supposed to know Dr. Jurati was a "double agent," but her killing Maddox caught me by surprise... but I did get the feeling that Dr. Maddox wasn't going to be around for long. Was that the same actor from TNG's Dr. Maddox? I think the criticism that the show is taking it's time to get to the meat & potatoes of the plot is a valid one, but I did enjoy the set up so far. I could've done with less from Soji and the Romulan Boy Band reject though. Still looking forward to Thursday mornings though...
Wasn't obvious to me, although it was foreshadowed in this ep when she was eavesdropping on Picard and Maddox in sick bay. Looks like she did Maddox pretty ugly, too- whatever happened to him looked and sounded pretty fucking awful. I enjoyed this ep more than the last one. Everyone got to chew the scenery a bit, which is occasionally fun. I was never a Voyager fan or a Jeri Ryan fanboy, but all these years later... dayum! She was looking good. In that tired, MILFy sort of way. Y'know. Still has the rack of justice, that's for sure. FINALLY, SOMEONE IN THE NEW TREK ERA SET A PHASER ON DISINTEGRATE! GO SEVEN! Raffi is a bit of an enigma to me. Former starfleet officer, very talented slicer, and... addict? Really? Seems to me that this show and Disco are taking the 'evolved human' concept that Roddenberry was fond of and just turning it on its ear. Starfleet officers are supposed to be somewhat exceptional, if by their training and experiences if nothing else. Humans raised in a post-scarcity 24th Century world should still be humans, but not necessarily with the same sort of problems we have today. Anyway, still enjoying the hell out of this. We've got confirmation that some big corruption is happening at the highest levels. Let's get to the bottom of it!
Also, the planet this week must be near what used to be the First Federation- they were serving up Tania. And did anyone else notice the neon sign for Mot's? Did Picard's old barber open a chain of franchises? Is Mot's the 25th Century Great Cuts?
So, are we not gonna talk about Icheb biting the dust within the first 90 seconds of the episode, or.... (I'd actually forgotten Icheb donated that cortex thingy to Seven, which is why the hack doctor couldn't find it. These writers paid better attention to continuity than Voyager ever did, so good for them) Also, Seven is canonically bi, The Gays(tm) have assimilated another one Dunno why they went about the dancing around Bedazzle (or whatever her name was) and Seven's relationship, cuz its not like CBS Trek is hobophobic like Rick Berman. Maybe plausible deniability about people screaming about bury your gays. Still, I'm supporting anything that pretends C/7 never happened, which is the only erasure I support On a serious note, I liked the Raffi story and giving her a background that's more than just about Picard. Although I could've sworn she couldn't have been older than 40, but apparently has a granddaughter on the way. Black really doesn't crack in the 25th century It does feel like the story is finally moving ahead. The Borg cube thing was slowing up so I'm glad we got a break from that.
Did anyone else think, for just a moment, that the Bedazzle chick was somehow Marina Sirtis? I had no idea who Icheb was, so if he was a throwback to a previous show (Voyager, I'm guessing) then it wasn't one I ever saw.
Also, what do you guys think of the 'warp effect' in this show? Too much like SW hyperspace or do you think it's some kind of transwarp conduit?
Oh, I definitely did! As a kid, Troi's hairstyles and clothes stuck out to me even before I watched a single full episode. Definitely got Betazoid vibes As for Icheb, he was part of group of Borgified children Janeway saved who became a reoccurring character in seasons 6 and 7. Being a Voyager fan, I'm sure @Lt. Mewa was gutted
It makes sense that Raffi is 'grandma' old. 14 years ago she was a full commander in starfleet, which implies she was in her late thirties to early forties at least back then, depending on how long it took her to climb the ladder. Realistically, she couldn't be much younger than her mid-50's in the show's 'present', and perhaps even older. At the cusp of the 25th Century, 60 is probably the new 30 or some shit like that.
Michelle Hurd is 53, so having a kid in his mid 20s seems fairly unremarkable. Substance issues make sense.. she got wind of a conspiracy on top of all the other shit during the evacuation of Romulus, it cost her both her family and career. Given the delivery system, she's probably blasting some serious shatter (THC concentrate) which is already looking to be a more "scientific" approach to therapeutic dosing in the present day. Loved the Bowie references in the title and location. Agreed, V'Jazz-el was giving of serious Betazoid vibes... really liked the TOS meets Fifth Element rave wear tho. In the adverts-were those Galaxy Quest type rock monsters fighting? Seven didn't die on screen, so she'll be back ("In case you ever need a vigilante"). Agnes didn't alter the EMH files... so she's busted, or should be.
Random thoughts on Episode 5... 1. Hello, Icheb! 2. Goodbye, Icheb! (And, fuck, the bit with the eye was brutal.) 3. Finally, there's Maddox. Not the same actor from TNG, but I didn't mind. 4. Tranya! 5. Financial institutions, jobs, corporations...seems less and less like some post-scarcity Utopia. 6. Seven. Got some mileage on her, but still hot. Like that she's evolved from where we last saw her. 7. Damn them for suggesting a lesbian relationship involving Seven...and not showing it. 8. Yes, whatshername had a strong Marina Sirtis vibe. 9. The Red Bolian? 10. Picard, a Frenchman, affects a...terrible French accent. 11. Set phaser to...flash boil. Me likee. 12. Soong gets name-dropped. 13. The plot tangent involving Raffi? Not interested, don't care. 14. Legolas is not growing on me. 15. Well, the conclusion was unexpected. I wonder what Commodore Oh showed Jurati? I got a feeling that we're going to uncover... All in all, pretty good. Feels like we're moving now.
