According to a segment on Ready Room, Babs is, IRL, a Ju Jitsu master and they wanted to use some of his skills since they never had him in a fight last season.

know personally or know of? either way, not sure it matters what Pike or Una's experience with her is...
all we know is that the lawyer in question hasn't responded to either of their calls but is the first pick in defending a sentient rights case.

The only other UFP lawyer that'd qualify for fan servicing is Areel Shaw... but at this point she wouldn't have developed a reputation of such note.

I was kinda 'meh' on the first show. Some good parts, including Spock's 'thing', a fun space battle, and an interesting premise on the mining planet. And the Klingons at the end were a lot of fun. Carol Kane was as usual fantastic. I liked how the back story of Spock includes a reason that he was so emotional in the Cage, and unlike all sorts of other retcons to TOS this one fit seemlessly and smoothly.

I rolled my eyes at Combat M'benga and Chapel who carry around steroids just in case they need to beat up a crew of Klingons who forget they have disruptors. Because everyone has to beat up Klingons, all the time. All sorts of smart ways you could have played that one. But just mindless combat because with illegal performance enhancing drugs, all things are possible!

And oh, someone is stealing the Enterprise, again? Well at least Spock had practice when he does it again in Menagerie.

Though I did like how Carol Kane's character reacted when she found out.

    Guess we'll see.

Then spend two seconds and establish the fact that this doctor, unlike every single other one on screen, spent extensive time in martial arts. That's a good hook. You could do a lot with that.

Instead we get speed addict doctor who goes into roid rage. Now that could be decent story if they take that to it's logical conclusion. If not and they drop it, we are left with 'drugs are good, mmmkay.'

And while I really like the actress that is playing Nurse Chapel this character has almost nothing to do the one we see on TOS. Maybe that's the arc, but it will be a very sad arc if they go that route.

If they want to do some sort of easter egg, it's feasible the lawyer could be the dad of the Admiral from TNG's "The Drumhead"

Ok... so I just finished S2E2, Ad Astro per Aspera.

    Wow!!

This is Trek back in it's truest form since... well, since last season!

These writers had something to say. I loved everything about this ep from the subject matter to the casting. Nothing subtle about it. It reminded me of the women's suffrage movement particularly the conflict between Susan B Anthony and her differing approach to it from Sojourner Truth. There's been a not so cozy relationship between black and white feminist ever since and Una and her lawyer's relationship mirrored that well. The casting helped too. I love this character and I hope she returns one day. Also the debate within the LGBT community and TERFs. I didn't expect this much allegory in modern Trek, but I'm glad it's back. When I think of the Trek episodes that occurred in a courtroom, I want to say this is probably the most compelling, but that may be my "recent-cy" bias speaking. I'm thinking of Measure of A Man and The Drumhead in particular. I'll have to watch those again.

    Point of order:
30/79 (assuming the 30 for the sake of argument) is a pretty darn high ratio compared to most of the other series (DS9 notwithstanding)

The allegory game in this episode was OFF the charts and I'm very here for it.

Easily the best script of 3rd Wave Trek and arguably the best episode.

If you're part of, or even aware of, a persecuted group afraid of a threatening majority literally anywhere in the world or in human history, you can see yourself in this script. some will call it heavy handed but Trek's best episodes are "heavy handed" allegory of this sort.

at about 40%, you could carve out enough of DISCO to make most people happy.

What a cop out. The United States is systemically racist Federation is full of racists that set up an apartheid planet, but there are democrats people who aren't MAGA still believe in Starfleet/ Federation values. Una is an crossed the border illegally asylum seeker, but didn't formally petition for asylum, but we'll let them in anyway dismiss the charges because white people won't do the jobs we need those people to do she's a good officer who shares our values.

It was more ham-fisted nonsense from Akiva Goldsman that he carried over from Discovery and the first two seasons of Picard.

    Federal Farmer disagrees!

Your honour, the prosecution rests. The accused has incriminated himself and proven my point. Should it please the court, I recommend summary execution as an appropriate sentence.

That's not what that chain of posts was about. It was about TOS being some sort of sacrosanct thing that can't be touched.

Ham fisted? If anything, it was subtle compared to "The Measure of A Man," "The Drumhead," from TNG, and "Court Martial" from the original series.

The Axanar fan film that CBS sued into oblivion had potentially to be a really good updated take on TOS or the pre-TOS era. Star Trek Continues had some really god episodes that finished the five year mission. Outside of Pike and maybe Spock, these characters don't match up. I will say I liked Uhura's moment in this episode, it felt closer to the character we see in TOS. The fact that they had Spock in the courtroom with La'an and even mention her heritage being connected to Khan does not line up with TOS. They just simply don't care about canon one bit, but they want us fans to be exited to references to TOS because they know it's important.

The only thing I hate watch is commercials, and because I'm a captive audience.
    I mute whenever possible.
    And that's on free-ass-TV.

I don't hate it. I liked the first season, but so far, this season has not impressed me. I liked Uhura's interaction with La'an, I liked the joke when Spock and the other Vulcan were "arguing" and I think these episodes are well acted. I just didn't like the solution. I've already mentioned what I liked about last week's episode, but if there's not constant praise then all @Diacanu sees is "hate."
