In the specific instance I was referring to, the person was smart enough to graduate from an elite high school and university, and got into the university on a full-ride scholarship (and was the first person in his family to go to college) so not exactly stupid.

It's specifically said that Khan left Earth in 1996.

Not to mention the Enterprise crew would have only known what Khan looked like from historial records, most of which would have been destroyed or damaged during WWIII. Maybe he always wore a flashy dictator suit in public and he's not as recognizable without it. There are countless stories about Superman actors going out in the suit for lunch during filming and getting mobbed, then going out on other days dressed like Clark Kent and no one giving them a second look.

From my own personal experience, I didn't recognize Christina Chong from her quite memorable role on Doctor Who at all. Someone had to point it out to me. And when I worked as a cashier I once served a local anchorwoman I'd seen daily in television for years, and had no idea who I was interacting with until she handed me her credit card to process. (She was much smaller and far more sun damaged in person.)

Silent film stars Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd were close friends and would often dine together in restaurants. They had a standing agreement that whoever was ID'd by a fan first, had to buy. Keaton always wound up buying because, without his trademark straw hat and glasses, nobody recognized Harold Lloyd. And that was in Hollywood, CA, where you'd expect to see celebrities out and about.

Which brings up another thing. Supposedly historical records were incomplete from the 1990s. But then all the sudden a) Spock can somehow estimate from the incomplete records that 90 supermen were unaccounted for, something he attributes to people not wanting the world to know that there were that many supermen on the loose, which kinda doesn't make sense that people would have been in the 90s "Huh, wonder where that guy who ruled over a quarter of the planet and his followers went? Oh well. No need to account for them" and b) that Kirk, Scotty and McCoy later are convinced that the historical record about Khan is accurate when it says he wasn't responsible for any massacres or wars of aggression when they know that the historical record's likely been fudged with.

And now that I think about it, haven't we all had moments in our lives where we suddenly realize something that was staring us in the face had been there for months, if not years? You know, maybe it's a movie that you've seen a dozen times before when something jumps out at you that actually changes some of your understanding of the film.

I did, actually. I wouldn't now. Except the San Francisco part. Would more likely be Texas or Florida.

But things look a lot more proto-fascist (in places) now than they did in the '90s

But then I have a long standing hobby horse about "near future" SF being TOO DAMN NEAR.

    Bladerunner is another classic example.

    SNW S02E10, "Hegemony"

If I had to grade the episode, which I don't really do the numbers anymore, but if I did, it would be an 11. Of course, I'm taking one point away because it's a cliffhanger. So it would be a 10.

    A few points:

    * The demarcation line is a political maneuver, not a true to space boundary. In essence, it was "you stay on this side of the line, regardless of where it goes, or we'll consider it an act of war." Remember, they informed Starfleet about it first, who informed the Enterprise. The Gorn knew exactly what they were doing.

    * Chapel and Spock leave the bridge before the saucer enters the atmosphere, so there isn't much gravity to counter. The rockets are doing the work of propelling and guiding the saucer down.

    * SCOTTY! I was completely caught by surprise. What a welcome, welcome surprise! I also love that Pelia considers him one of her best students while having some of the worst grades. She likes it when people think outside of the box, she just wants them to follow it up with the goods. Scotty probably goes off in a dozen different directions with new ideas, and it frustrates her.

    * My brain was moving a thousand miles a second trying to make connections, backing it up with canon (as I know it), formulating new plot theories, and extrapolating what might happen to the characters based on the data I had at the time. Yes, some of them have plot armor because of future events, but there are characters I like very much who don't have that plot armor, like La'an, and Ortegas, with La'an my greatest concern because Boimler didn't even acknowledge her like he did so many others in "Those Old Scientists."

So now we have to wait who knows how long for the conclusion of this cliffhanger. I want to say they stuck the landing, but they're still in the air! This was a fantastic episode, though, and this was definitely a fantastic season. If they cancel this, I swear to Gort I will travel to Paramount studios and take a dump in their flower garden.

Well, Boimler was probably scared of revealing any knowledge of Khan's revival a few years hence - that really WOULD fuck things up. And La'an is far scarier than anyone else on the Enterprise. It's also possible that La'an's place in the history books is massively overshadowed by Khan's antics, so even if she does have a successful career Boimler doesn't know about it.

I really liked this episode, it reminded me of some of the classic DS9 cliffhangers. I knew as soon as I saw the black haired dude come around the corner, it must be Scotty. They're obviously building up to TOS. I wonder if they're planing on Pike eventually leaving or will the show end with the TOS crew taking over. I liked the updated TOS fight music, it almost had a TWOK sound to it. It also sounded like they were invoking Interstellar's soundtrack with a ticking sound. This one is pretty solid for me, let's hope they stick the landing.

These seasons are too short for cliffhangers. Back in the TNG/DS9/VOY days, shows would take the summer off and return in the fall. … and I thought THEY were assholes for doing that.

SNW is only 10 eps, so that means we have to wait 8-9 months for a resolution… and with this WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike, it’s more than likely gonna be longer!

With that said, great ep to end the season on. This one was still good, but definitely not as good as S1, IMHO.

so there's a guy doing youtube shorts about Toronto apartments. He'll meet a tenant outside, ask'em what they pay and then go for a walk through

the other day one of the places in the BG of TTT was featured... may have been the same unit even...$6K/month!

    Very much disagree.

S2 of SNW is easily amongst one of the top seasons of Trek, and that's with the reduced episode count.

DSC season 1 was 15 episodes, I thinks that a good compromise between 26 episodes and 10 episodes. I think that gives you room to do a cliffhanger episode without rushing things and it allows more room for character development. The Americans had 13-15 episodes and Breaking Bad did the same. The episode run time was also 50 minutes, SNW episode run times vary.

True, but with an episode like this one, every single possibility is up for grabs, and we have to wait at least two fucking years to see the end results.

I'm fine with streaming services going with reduced episode counts, similar to British shows.

On the plus side, it really puts the pressure on the showrunners to do good work. I think 20-26 episodes per season just leaves too much slack and allows for a lot of sloppy and shitty episodes (as evidenced by many prior Trek series).

On the downside, if you have a long string of stinkers (like ST: Discovery) with a short season, it can torpedo the whole show.

Nonetheless, I'm happy with the "less is more" concept.

No doubt, less is more is ideal. These big budget flops this summer hopefully will force a shift to less spectacle and more story. I've noticed that it appears SNW used their budget wisely by using Toronto as much as possible as stand ins for various locations while still giving us nice starship/space porn.

I reconcile the short seasons by thinking of them as parts 1 and 2 of a single 20 episode season BUT the longer the "hiatus" the more frustrating it is - particularly with a cliffhanger.

As for the episode, I have many thoughts but none more anxious to be expressed than this one:

yeah, it's fun playing spot the locations (I spent an hour trying to remember where that park from this episode is when the season trailer first showed it-I know I've been there). There's a bit of it in DISCO too...

although AFAIK, they actually do the interior stuff in Mississauga, up near Dixie and Hwy 401. Makes sense as that's just south of the airport.

    Agreed.

For me 10 episode seasons are too short. 12-13 episodes is a good number, IMHO.

This episode was great, but knowing that the cliffhanger folo won't happen for a long, long time really sucks. :garamet:

There was a Scot who was in the running to play Scotty in the Abrams movie who looked like Doohan, but he lost out due to a scheduling conflict.
