No, I'm pretty sure that it collapsed because a couple of no-talent hacks couldn't come up with a plot if their lives depended on it and tried to invoke "kewlness" factors to make up the difference.

Let's see: for the last big budget movie installment of Star Trek, what boundaries did the writers push? What new heights of science fiction/social commentary did they strive for?

    The old "evil twin" chestnut.

Yes, lots of things are wrong with the franchise, but a complete bankruptcy of interesting or imaginative story ideas is certainly one of the biggies...

Kirk: We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so very pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die.
    [Kirk grabs Bendis' jaw]
Kirk: Look at that freshly starched red shirt!

[A large object smashes into the front of Enterprise.]
    KIRK: SULU!
SULU: [frantically] It's okay! I- I'm a leaf on the wind!
    KIRK: What does that mean?!

You're getting cause and effect reversed, Kyle. Trek fans decided their vision was "better" because the creatively bankrupt Berman and Braga were churning out such horrid shit that almost anything would have been better.
